The Little Golem Short Story Prize

2012-04-02
Ingo Althofer

Everybody here on Little Golem knows the thread
‘this thread is "a word association game in a thread"....’.
Sometimes it is fantastic to see how quickly our chains
of association run through the world.

I set out the following prize:
Send me a short story which contains (in some random order)
20 consecutive words/expressions from the word-association-
game-thread. The language should be English.
The prize will be a copy of my game "EinStein wurfelt
nicht" with a wooden board. Contributions are to be send
by email to 3-hirn-verlagballaballagmx.de
where ballaballa has to be substituted by the wellknown
symbol. Deadline for Submissions is June 30, 2012.
The jury will be opnly me. However, I will feel free to
collect expert advice from others.

The string of 20 consecutive expressions has to be taken
from the 3620 first postings in the thread. This list
ends on April 02, 2012, with

> godel esher bach
> zermelo
> Zermelo Fried Chicken (ZFC)
> axiomatization
> axiomatization
> axiomatization
> Zorn’s Lemmon
> Bitter Lemmon

By this rule I want to avoid that someone takes an
existing nice short story and then makes 20 postings
in a row with words from that story.

Please ask, when I was unclear.

Ingo.

I wish I could write a short story with any words.

but wait, the story should have only 20 words/expressions?
or u must USE 20 of the words/expressions in your story?

good question. without a few improv words in-between, it is very hard to construct sentences. (not enough verbs)

Of course, a typical short story will have more than 20 words.
The condition is that 20 consecutive words/terms from the thread
have to be within the story – in any order. And some of them may
be in the story more than once.

> I wish I could write a short story with any words.

In times of PC and electronic text processing it is not that difficult.
Simply start with a promising 20-string. Write these words in
a text file, shuffle them around and write something between them.

You may also write 20 words on little sheets of paper and shuffle them
around on your table, building groups and sequences...
(And you may add ideas and key words on the 20 little sheets)

It would completely fine when the story has
altogether 2000 words... (so 1 % inspiration,
99 % tanspiration)

Reminder:
less than four weeks to go for the short story competition.

Cheers, Ingo.

Last Reminder: five more days for submissions.

And a hint: you have to be really smart to
surpass the best submission(s) so far.

It was a fun competition :) I don’t count on winning, but writing is always fun. Looking forward to read the best one.

A Night in Monte Carlo
by Andres Cruz (Copyright June 2012)

May’s here, and I should be thankful. And
I know that Thanksgiving day is not even
close. Down under the bed, Isaw a couple
of empty bottles of Montepulciano. I’m not
sure if this is more like a Monty Python’s
gag or the crime scene of one episode of
CSI Las Vegas.

I barely can remember some images of the
gambling of last night, it was about my
twohundredth gamble in the roulette, (probably
about my seventeenth shot of Tequila as well).
I really wanted the do the full Monty.

In the Casino, you may or may not win. But I was in
Monte Carlo and I was feeling lucky, but I don’t
remember if I was (lucky). Headache or hangover are
wrong words to describe how I’m felling. It feels like
a thunder smashed my head, or a poisonous snake bit me
in the neck.

I was thinking that I still have a couple of hours to
get ready for another night of gambling, when I said
to myself: “We are in cycle now”. Meanwhile I got up
to turn off the radio. At the background it was "The
Who" sounding at loud : "Doctor, there’s something wrong."

***************************************
Task for all non-participants: Try to find out
which the 20 words from the thread are.

Ingo.
