Reply to this topic Return to forumI am no longer as excited about the 'play by forum' and I have started playing more 'real time' games. For chess, I am very happy using chess.com where I usually play the 10 minute format. Are there are such sites for other games? Where it is reasonable to find an opponent?
I believe most services would include only a single game (such as chess or go), but for example iggamecenter.com has a huge amount of games. Unfortunately the playerbase is not very large… For Go, you might want to use KGS or GlGo, and no doubt searching google for ways to play other board games online will yield some results.
iggamecenter.com is a great site, I don't understand why there are only a few players.. It has basically every strategy board game, and also a “sandbox” that can be used to play new/own games with custom rules.
Iggamecenter is great but without players :(Have a look at boardgamearena (it's where I began hex which leads me to LG…)
KGS is good for Go (I haven't played there in a while, I've been meaning to start again). You need to use Java for it, but if running applets is a problem for you, you can download a JAR file to your computer and run that. There is a newer site called OGS; back when I tried it, they had crazy problems with their rating system.
I sometimes play live chess on FICS (freechess.org). I've been on there since 1999, so I don't intend to move anywhere else. :) chess.com works OK but somehow doesn't charm me as much as FICS does.
Yes, Ludoteka has realtime Hex tournaments every Wednesday, and Havannah tourneys on Fridays. You get one minute to make all your moves, with 5 seconds increment per move.

Ludoteka sounds very interesting, I hope I will be able to participate in the tournaments at some time.I like a lot of games, so a good playerbase is much more important for me than a good game selection.
OGS and KGS are both good options for go. KGS has more players than OGS, but requires Java, whereas OGS just uses browser based technologies.
81dojo.com is good for shogi.
BTW littlegolem was down a short while ago, and now my list of active games is empty… does anyone else have this problem?
Thanks for the Checkers program! I use stuff like that, and it runs well. I'm sure to enjoy this in the future!
Let us not forget about that live Twixt site that several members here play at:

(I am not one of them)

BGG has a pretty comprehensive list, but for modern abstract you're probably going to be on turn-based servers more, it seems.

Twixtlive offers Twixt without the pie rule. When I asked about that, the general consensus seemed to be, That's something REALLY STRONG players might do, but it's too much bother for us.
