Tournament with the very best players
  • Christian K at 2013-09-23

    Hey all

Wouldn't it be fun to gather as many of the very best dots players for a championship. It seems that many of the good player quit but are still sort of hanging around here. Maybe the quit because they didn't have enough time. It seems like they might be able to find the time to play a single tournament (but maybe not play regurlarly which is why they stopped).

I don't know if anyone would be interested, but it would be a lot of fun to gather the different people that have dominated through the years.

  • FatPhil at 2013-09-23

Members can arrange private (password protected) tournaments, so that such a thing can be controlled.

  • diego44 at 2013-09-26

Sure, sounds interesting. Who you'd invite?

  • Christian K at 2013-09-27

Well I am a newer player to the site do I am not necessarily the best one to decide it. I am not necesarrily trying to make it as exclusive as possible (if someone thinks he is able to compete, I think he should be welcome to do it). The most important thing would be to get as many of the very good players as possible.

    The ratings suggest as top10:

    sghsal
    flipster
    Scot
    Geoff Cameron
    _Astrid_
    diego44
    Dryad
    JJ10
    michael
    Carroll

I think additionel players that just didn't get a high enough rating but could still be good enough include

    the_shark_c
    7ics
    FairyTail

wccanard shoul be included too if he would be willing to.

But as I said, if someone feels competent to compete, I think they could be included.

  • diego44 at 2013-09-27

I think you should include Smoores in any case! If there is enough interest in this tournament, we should do a poll, if 1) anyone is allowed to compete and if not 2) should we ban The Shark (who is always controversial :P ).

Apart from that I'm fine with your choice of players although I have to say I won't compete.

I strongly doubt that everyone of the players mentioned is still reading this forum, so we must find a way to contact them.

  • flipster at 2013-09-27

I think a better idea would be to do a real-time tournament with a reasonable time limit, for example on www.bordspel.nl

Wccanard and I played some games on there a few years ago and I enjoyed that more than playing on littlegolem – a 5x5 game really shouldn't take too long.

  • diego44 at 2013-09-27

I would be in if we're going to play realtime! :) The level of play would certainly be much lower but everyone can afford that time. I like your idea.. Maybe at iggc which is a nice platform.

  • Dryad at 2013-09-27

Real-time is a really cool idea and I'd totally be up for that. What I'm most bored of is actually the analysis part (yes, i'm extremely lazy). Spending hours and hours for a single move simply isnt thaaat exciting. However, it's certainly not possible to gather everyone at a single time.

In case we play the tournament on littlegolem: I'll only participate if someone I haven't played yet joins as well (from the list above thats Scot, FairyTail, Smoores and Wccanard (also 7ics but i'll play him/her in dots.mc.2013.sep.2.1 so that doesn't count)).

The players who haven't been logged in for a long time are Smoores, FairyTail and Wccanard. We can contact FairyTail and Wccanard by email I think?… no idea how to contact Smoores. Moreover, what about top-players from jijbent? I always wanted to play Rekenwonder some day :o.

  • diego44 at 2013-09-27

@Dryad: Yeah, you already played against FairyTail at jijbent, with 2 losses out of 2 games. :p

I think rekenwonder and jeffreyp, the leaders of jijbent are inactive atm, no idea how to contact them. Smoores used to play actively at ytmt afaik until two months ago, if he still logs on we could catch him there. About FairyTail, I can concern my self..

  • Dryad at 2013-09-27

Please… the first time I played FairyTail was in October 2012… I started playing dots in the end of August 2012… I was an absolute noob back then and can't count that in. Also, the second time was a time-out with only 3 moves played. No impact on my reasoning ._.

Rekenwonder plays some games of veldslag atm so he's definitley not inactive. The last time Smoores was online at Ytmt was 11th August.

  • 7ics at 2013-09-27

I wont join a real-time tournament as the difference in time is causing me trouble, but i'd certainly join a tournament here on littlegolem.

  • diego44 at 2013-09-27

Ouch. :/ So, to be honest, the little time would cause me trouble too, although I'd still play it, because it's just fun.

As I think 7ics should compete, we have a problem now. :(

  • Christian K at 2013-10-02

I think real time is an awesome idea (I think it would be great if it were possible for spectators to watch). I think most people would agree that real time is a bit more serious since a worse player will sometimes beat a better one by spending more time analyzing here.

Everyone can bruteforce a game given enough time (and that the won't die of old age), so I think your skill is determined by how fast you are at analyzing the positions.

I think a real time tournament should be possible, but not all games would have to be played at the same time.

  • Christian K at 2013-10-02

btw, isn't smoores the same person as scot?

  • diego44 at 2013-10-02

    They are not the same.

  • Tobias Lang at 2013-10-12

I would love to see such a tournament. I am a fan :)

My bet would go for wccanard!

  • Dryad at 2013-11-11

    Heh :)

flipster, diego and I met to play some live-games today. I really enjoyed it a lot and I would like to share the games with you. The level of play wasn't as high as on littlegolem, but for a time-limit of 20 minutes per game (10 minutes each player) we did pretty well I think.

Was a really cool thing and I would love to do it again. So if anyone wants to meet up in order to play some games, feel free to tell me so (and I guess diego and flipster would like to play once more as well).

  • Christian K at 2014-02-14

Hey Dryad. Didnt see that post before, I am so glad to hear that you managed :) and thanks a bunch for posting the games. Well done.

  • Christian K at 2014-02-14

I am guessing that the player you write first was p1.

  • Dryad at 2014-02-14

    Yeah

  • FatPhil at 2014-02-14

Ditto. Shame you couldn't pull in a 4th (or more). 3 players is basically pessimal time-wise, as everything has to be serialised.

  • Christian K at 2014-02-14

Why cant you play two games at the same time? :)

  • aldiris at 2014-02-14

How live is live? Did you meet or play on some (what?) website?

  • diego44 at 2014-02-14

    We played at iggamecenter.com.

  • Dryad at 2014-02-14

Yeah, we met on iggamecenter.com - the difference is that you dont have to refresh the page, you have much less time for a move and there's a live-chat where players and spectators can chat. So I guess live is as live as live.

Welp, playing just one game at a time is already insanely hard with 30 seconds per move (we raised the time-limit later on), so playing two games at a time is… just “meh”. But yeah, might have been even better with more than 3 players; in fact I was simply too lazy to organize something bigger than this. Well, I'm certainly up for doing this again - maybe with more than 3 players. :)

  • KPT at 2014-02-14
