Best 1 Point Answers
  • Judy at 2006-12-04

    This should be fun.

For everyone willing to share their off beat 1 point answers…

Life: is a bitch and then you die (1)

  • Ed Collins at 2006-12-04

Can offbeat include stupid answers, answers that you look back on and can't believe you actually submitted?

How are you?: not too bad (1)

    China: great wall of (1)

    Albert Einstein: white hair (1)

Here's another possible category: Answers Which Truly Deserved More Points Than They Received.

For that category I dare anyone to top this one:

All time best movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1)

    Runner-up in this category:

Children: sons (1) and daughters (1)

  • wandu at 2006-12-04

I was a somewhat shocked at Life: Preserver(1)

I thought Wizard of Oz: Wonderful(1)

Actor's Last name: Jones(1)…Smith was worth 11. How unfair.

    Green: Land(1)

    Paper: Football(1)

    The there's this one:

Things I should be doing when I play empathy: Going Outside(1)

That entire round was bizarre to me.

  • Jaakko Pirinen at 2006-12-04

“Rivers begins with R”: true (1) - hey, 'Rivers' does begin with R, of course it's true…

“muscial instrument”: error (1) - well, there was a typo in the expression. Don't you even read them before you answer? ;)

    “little golem”: .net (1)

  • Judy at 2006-12-04

Green: blue and yellow (1), yellow and blue (1), not ripe (1)

    These were decent answers!!! :-)

  • Thierry Wasserman at 2006-12-05

I was really stumped by the last one (life), so I got the Douglas Adams way and had universe (2), everything (1) and 42 (1). Also, why was I the only one to take a GPS on my camping trip?

  • Ed Collins at 2006-12-05

For 'camping trip' my responses included sunscreen (3), insect repellent (2), and canteen (4). Prior to the results, I remember being very happy with all three of those answers!

  • MichaeI X at 2006-12-05

The “most unknown country” deserved a different rating and publishing system anyway, because the most unknown country should have got 0 points ;)

I was astonished, to find my antarctica with (1), because it's rather big.

Thierry, I considered hithhiker's guide to galaxy (Life, Universe and Everything) as well, thought then: don't take stuff the young people do not know any more, forgetting there was a new film on it recently. But my old man's association of “life insurance” was not much better.

Anybody ever calculated from the number of participants and the sum of all published points >=2, how many secret 1point answers get lost on a typical GoE round ?

  • Silas at 2006-12-05

Let me have a look… for “Life”, I put “Imprisonment”. I was happy with that…

For Africa, I did a lot better than I expected… even with three one-pointers, serengeti (1), wildebeest (1), gazelle (1)

And going back to “Lunch”, nobody else put in “liquid”. Perhaps liquid lunch is a slang term nobody else knows…

  • Paavo Pirinen at 2006-12-05

For funny or clever answers I must go way back. I don't do them much these days.

Rivers begins with R: mark twain (1), dream (1) [forum was not working as good/bad as it works today]

favourite beer: ginger ale (1) [probably best ale I've tasted]

most unknown country?: finland (1), unknown (1), antartica (1), neverneverland (1) [It really buggers me I wrote Antarctica wrong. Sorry Michael.]

Most known city ?: bethlehem (1), troy (1) [Bethlehem? Never heard of…]

Some latest I did no submit (for apparent reason):

nonhuman races in popular science fiction: pod race [at least it's inhuman to put into a movie]

methods of communication: violence, art [violence is not the best way to communicate, but many still try]

Ten places you want to visit before you die: afterlife [if such a thing is, a sneek peek would be nice]

  • Tasmanian Devil at 2006-12-05

Here are some low scores I have recieved that surprised me.

    tree ——————————- palm ————– 2p

    fire ——————————- torch ————- 1p

    china —————————— pekingduck ——– 1p

    organs —————————– bodyparts ——— 1p

    new york ————————— cabs ————– 2p

things you find in a desert ——– dromedary ——— 2p

things to take on a camping trip — girlfriend ——– 1p

  • Thierry Wasserman at 2006-12-05

Taz, I liked the last one, girlfriend. Not a good idea to forget her home.

  • Thierry Wasserman at 2006-12-05

Oh, I forgot; for “life”, 42 was a one pointer too.

  • anwi at 2006-12-05

Kpato: The guy's name is Pacino, with only one C.

If we're not sticking to one pointers only now. My favorite all time “bad” answer is still “10 Places you want to go before you die” : Hospital(2)

  • KPT at 2006-12-05

    wklñaklña wandu

    u are right

    but pacino has 5 points.

  • Bill Collins at 2006-12-06

Since the CRASH, I have had only 9 one-point answers!! Anyone with less?

  • Art Duval at 2006-12-06

Since the CRASH, and missing only one game, I have had 7 one-point answers, 4 of them coming in my ill-fated “insect” game.

  • Carroll at 2006-12-06

Well not that good at it, so a selection :

Things I should be doing when I play empathy -> not think (1)

things you do on vacation -> children (1)

breakfast food -> corn flakes (1)

    forecast -> computation (1), model (1), theory (1), trafic (1), science (1), eartquakes (1) 41 out of 98…

Favorite Supervillians -> bush (1), sadam hussein (1)

    Halloween! -> phantom(1)

    Fish -> egg (1)

96 hours is too long -> one day (1)

Africa -> black people (1) [sorry]

I feel there is something I did not get in this game but can not put a name…

  • Ed Collins at 2006-12-06

Art, that's pretty good. I've had just eight 1-point answers.

Three of those 1-point answers came in the same darn game…. 96 hours is too long. I put down: time limit(1), very(1), subject(1).

    The others:

    green –> st patrick(1)

    life –> organism(1)

    algebra –> subject(1)

    Africa –> cairo(1)

    Dog Names –> bandit(1)

Tip: An fast and easy way to check is to go the PAST GAMES page and with your browser, do a search on “(1)“. This is more accurate than just looking for them… since you're less likely to miss one this way.

    magic : broom (1)

  • Thierry Wasserman at 2006-12-08

Now that you mention broom. Amazing it didn't get more answers…

  • Ed Collins at 2006-12-08

Yes, I'm also surprised broom didn't get more answers, but only because 'witch' scored so well. However, I don't consider broom a very good answer for 'magic'. (Sorry yper) It probably only initially seemed like a good answer to you because 'witch' was on your mind. (If you listed broom I'll bet you also listed witch. I can't imagine you lising the former and not the latter!)

If 'witch' was the category, them 'broom' is a GREAT answer… almost certainly a top ten answer!

Play the game in reverse… if I listed broom and a whole bunch of the other lower-point answers that we had for magic, (Christmas, mystery, kind, fun, fire, star, staff, queen, saw, etc.) I don't think many players are going to associate those words with 'magic'. At least I don't think they are.

That's often how I play the game. I look at my ten answers and ask myself if those answers, taken together as a whole, all point to the given expression. To put it another way, if I gave all ten of my answers to a stranger, and asked him/her what word or expression was used to produce these answers, I would hope/expect he or she would come up with the given expression.

  • klaashaas at 2006-12-08

That's often how I play the game.

Looking at your recent performance, I'm unsure what to do with this information :-p

  • wandu at 2006-12-08

    Ouch. Low blow there.

And Judy, the preferred spelling of Braille was worth 6 points in the communication round…

  • Ed Collins at 2006-12-08

Yes, looking at my recent performances, you almost want to do exactly the OPPOSITE of whatever I recommend! :)

I'm in 15th position over the past 7 games.

  • Bill Collins at 2006-12-08

    A Ton Better Than Me!!

  • Judy at 2006-12-09

Mis-spelling has been a bane from the beginning of this game. And always is is just stupid mistakes. Always makes me go GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

and bang my head on the keyboard.

So, no folks, QWERTY is not a facial tattoo.

  • Ed Collins at 2007-04-27

I've got a better one for things that are orange: guppy

Heck, goldfish received 21 points (which I also had). Hard for me to believe no one else thought of a guppy.

  • Paavo Pirinen at 2007-04-27

Hehh… protestant would have given me three points. Not too bad, though worse than my worst, flame. Protestant was definitely my best bad idea.

  • Judy at 2007-04-27

Well, my 2 best ideas, traffic cones (1), prison jumpsuits (1), were also one point answers. These are so obviouslly bright ORANGE. I cannot believe they were not heavy point getters…..

  • FatPhil at 2007-04-27

'traffic cones' and 'prison jumpsuite' are two word answers. I think other people avoid two-word answers, so I avoid them.

I don't even know what “utility truck” refers to, let alone knowing what colour it is. Fire trucks are red. Council services trucks are grey. The telephone guy's van is yellow.

But heck, I'm colour-blind, so I'm probably making those up!

Things in Space–Hydrogen, no one else thought of hydrogen? It is the most abundant element in space, something like 75% of all of the elements in the universe…Space itself is actually Hydrogen

  • ypercube at 2007-06-11

Space is actually Hydrogen? Sorry Ray, that's the first time i've ever heard of such a statement/hypothesis.

    Pigs in space : 1 point… :(

  • Thierry Wasserman at 2007-06-11

I soooo wanted to put pigs as my answer - Not “pigs in space” just pigs - but thought I might be in a minority of Muppet Show freaks.

Hydrogen is something like 90% of the total number of atoms in the universe (not mass) but I would say that space is mostly empty… and dark matter.

  • FatPhil at 2007-06-11

Yper - it should be common knowledge. Space is basically full of hydrogen. OK, about one atom every 10 cm^3, but compared to everything else it's the most abundant atom there is. Helium is pathetic with about 1/20 as many atoms. The 90% figure I've seen is for H & He combined.

  • Thierry Wasserman at 2007-06-11

Hydrogen is ~74-75% of the mass of regular stuff (baryonic matter) while He is roughly ~23-24%. Helium weighs around four times more than hydrogen, so you do the math on abundance…

  • ypercube at 2007-06-11

FatPhil, there is a difference between the two statements:

    Space itself is actually Hydrogen.

    and

Space is basically full of hydrogen.

While the second is common knowledge, the first sounds to me like space is not made of atoms or protons and electrons or other particles or strings but - a new extreme theory - that is itself actually Hydrogen.

  • Ray Garrison at 2007-06-13

my real motivation for this posting is to bring this topic back to page one as it got burried on page two because of all of the postings by KR. But I also thought is was interesting that I had three one point answers that were all good responses to “glass” namely “diamond” (cuts glass) “shine” and “thermal”.

  • FatPhil at 2007-06-14

@ Judy, Ed, (3): What the hell are cuff links ?

Ok, my dictionary knows them, and I confess to remember the meaning (after translation).

But they would never come to my mind to look them up.

    Similar for “tie bar/tack”…

If I had thought of such a thing, my dict would have called it a “tie pin”.

OK, I performed bad because I rather chose gem varieties

    (“jewels” rather than “jewelry”)

The right mixture would have made it ;)

Didn't we have a similar dicussion on hair vs. hairs, long ago?

We non native English speakers can fool you quite nicely ;)

  • FatPhil at 2007-07-21

Not a 1-pointer, but I made a stupid gamble - I thought that more people would misspell earrings, so went for earings(4), and not earrings(44). Without that gross error of judgement, I'd have had all of the top 9 and been 2nd!

Rule n+1: don't try to be too clever.

  • Judy at 2007-07-21

    MichaelX,

I am not sure “tie bar/tacks” are still being worn, but yes. basica;ly they are men's jewelry made to keep a necktie from falling in your soup. LOL

Even “cuff links” are not around like they were 25 years ago. Once a most a standard “safe gift” for Dad or Grad, they were an accessory men could have many different sets of and were used in “french cuff” long sleeved men's dress shirts.

    FatPhil,

Yeah, sometimes it's easy to outthink oneself.

Also, shouldn't “sex” have come up at least once with the topic jewelry?

    Congratulations to Merlin and Karen.

Exactly 10 points in this topic “Letters from A to Z”!

It takes a big discipline not to answer 'A' to that topic.

Would you reveal your 10 one point answers, please ?

  • Thierry Wasserman at 2007-09-07

Is there a parallel game trying to get as little points as possible? Can I play :)

  • Carroll at 2007-09-07

Please do not play both games at the same time as they will interfere.

If we play least point contest please indicate clearly!

Yper beat me on that game for “what is in your lunch bag?” with only 10 points but I think putting just one word is cheating, even if as FatPhil encouraged this word is part of the question. You should play 10 1-point words (last place ex-aequos possible).

  • Ed Collins at 2007-09-07

Exactly 10 points is easy to achieve, especially since the one-point answers aren't revealed. For this past game (letters A to Z) I could have answered dog, cat, bird, fish, turtle, etc., and finished with 10 points as my final score, since certainly no one else would have listed those answers. (Or I could have answered dfdfd, edorlg, d;ckkio, dloer, etc.)

9 points is easy to achieve too. Answer as I've shown above but leave one space blank.

Likewise if you wish to achieve 8 points, 7 points, etc.

I agree that if too many players are attempting to score low rather than high, then the entire game is compromised.

  • Carroll at 2007-09-07

So you are right a real challenge would be 0 point(s) answer, has that already happened?

  • Carroll at 2007-09-07

    I got :

“Your entry was registered. 0 words was accepted (plural and singular of the same word is not accepted).

Back - You can modify your move until game is not finished.”

is that worth 0 points ?

  • Ed Collins at 2007-09-07

I suppose I can make a case that I've had zero points a lot of times… every time that I don't play at all. :)

Entering and entering ten “blanks” that would probably also produce a score of 10 points. (Assuming no one else entered a blank either.) But I don't think that's how it works. I'm thinking a “blank” isn't recognized as an answer at all. To be honest, I'm not sure how Richard handles blanks. (I've never not entered ten different answers.)

But yes, if a person is shooting for the lowest score, ideally then it should not be 10 points or less. 11 points would be actually be harder to achieve than 10 points, as I've described above.

  • FatPhil at 2007-09-07

If 80 people enter and 50 are aiming for 10 points, then, if they're serious about it, the chance of those 500 answers interfering with those of the 30 real players is close to zero. So it's effectively a 30-player game, and 50 jokers wasting their own time. I don't see that as compromising the game any more than the 50 not playing at all.

  • Ed Collins at 2007-09-07

Ah, but at SOME point the game would be compromised. Take an extreme case… say I'm the only person out of 80 who is attempting to get a high score. My answers also wouldn't match anyone those of anyone else!

Even two or three players playing “correctly” out of many dozen who “aren't” would probably screw things up.

But I know that if the majority of players are indeed all trying to pick the most popular answers, and a small handful of few players are attemtping to achieve a different goal, that shouldn't be a problem.

  • Judy at 2007-09-07

No matter how screwy my thinking is…I always get at least 1 point for the words I've entered.

The only way to play the low score game is to shoot for 11. Put in bonafide answers where only one will match somebody elses.

On the last, I researched the most frequently used letters in US writing. DUH. I never even thought of just going a,b,c,d,e,f,g,.etc.

  • Ed Collins at 2007-09-07

My hat is off to everyone who came up with a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i, and Z.

Why did you stop after “i” and then jump straight to “z”?

I thought for sure I would tie with a bunch of people if I simply entered the first ten letters of the alphabet.

  • FatPhil at 2007-09-07

Explained above. Use of an example in the question. What's in your lunch bag? lunch.

  • Bill Collins at 2007-09-07

I played A,B,C… and even Z. But I thought people would play letters like X, Q, and O. As for Karen, I really don't think she tried to get the losest score, she just does kind of bad most of the time anyways.

  • MichaeI X at 2007-09-08

I thought similar to Bill: A,B,C and Z was obvious for me.

Researching for the most used characters in English was a too smart idea.

So I went for a highly empathic X, the Y as the counterpart to ABC, and then I filled up with DEFG.

    Similar result to yours, Bill.

I was surprised by the high empathy for “I”.

As for Karen, I don't think she “seriously” goes for minimal points.

  • Dionysos at 2007-09-29

tasmanian Devil got a point with “twoandtwoisfour”???

    Surely “twoandtwoAREfour”?

  • FatPhil at 2007-09-29

If read as the elision of “the sum of […]“, then it's singular.

  • Dionysos at 2007-09-30

    Not necessarily.

two is the subject, and four is the object, so 2 and 2 are 4.

In the same way, “A husband and wife ARE an object”, not IS a pair.

    2 plus 2 are 4, or 2 plus 2 equals 4.

But 4 is 2 plus 2. There, the 4 is the subject, and 2 is the object.

  • FatPhil at 2007-09-30

Necessarily. If read as the elision of “the sum of […]“, then the subject

is the singular “the sum of two and two”, and the object is “four”.

A husband and wife *is* the traditional unit in western marriages.

Pie and mash *is* typical English pub grub.

You appear to be confusing the word used to denotate a number with the grammatical mark of that number. Numbers greater than 1 aren't magically automatically plural in all contexts.

When it comes to years of education, 10 *is* better than 5.

I know there's a pondian divide when it comes to the number for groups (companies, clubs, bands, etc.) this might be just a broader or more specific instance of that.

  • MichaeI X at 2007-09-30

    Some other examples:

Two *is* a rather small number, but two *are* a pair.

2 and 2 *are* 2 numbers, which are about equal, from an engineering point of view.

Yes, pie and mash *is* typical English pub grub, and both pie and mash *are* horrible, in general.

Thinking about and tasting it, I have problems with Merlin's

2 plus 2 are 4, or 2 plus 2 equals 4. If it were plural , shouldn't it be “equal” instead of “equals”?

In my German brain and tongue, the plurals “are” and “equal” just don't fit in that arithmetic context. It becomes possible in an addition like

“Three beer yesterday and two today up to now, *are* too much”

(*is* works as well here for me, giving it a slightly different meaning)

Could be different in Cyprus(?) or Finland.

    Perhaps some natives could help

(If they don't feel offended by my opinion about pie and mash).

  • MarleysGhost at 2007-09-30

“2 plus 2” is already a number. Which number is it? It is four. 2 plus 2 is 4. “And” is just a shorthand for “plus”. 2 and 3 is 5. If you were to say “2 and 3 are 5”, to get a plural subject, you'd have to consider “and” as a conjunction rather than a synonym for the mathematical operation “plus”, which would give it the meaning “2 is 5 and 3 is 5, so 2 and 3 are (both) 5.”

I'm with Meik X. “2 plus 2 equals 4” indicates “2 plus 2” is singular. However, the song “Inchworm” says “One and one are two”, which shows that songwriters need be neither grammarians not engineers.

BTW, in English, “to be” is not transitive and does not take an object. In the sentence “Harry and Neville are brothers”, “brothers” is a predicate nominative, not an object. While this is moot for nouns, pronouns change between the subjective and the objective, so it makes a difference in sentences like “I am he.” (I will grant you that there are many Anglophones who would say “I am him” or “I'm him” in colloquial speech. )

  • MarleysGhost at 2007-10-02

Hjallti JFK: I am a berliner

    2007-05-06

    Dustin ich bin ein berliner

Surely, JFK's “Ich bin ein Berliner” is “I am a hamburger!

  • Thierry Wasserman at 2007-11-17

No, it actually means: I am a jelly doughnut.

I would guess someone from Berlin would say something like: Ich bin aus Berlin or something similar.

  • MarleysGhost at 2007-11-17

Germans I've talked to say it should have been “Ich bin Berliner.” I speculate that either Kennedy did the (non-idiomatic) translation himself or chose the erroneous translation because he knew it would look better to non-German speakers.

  • MichaeI X at 2007-11-19

    You are all correct:

A “berliner” is a jelly donut (spherical, not a torus). My dictionary tells that some Americans even know it as a “bismarck”, which is very funny for me.

“I am a Hamburger” is a good translation, because it carries the nice ambiguity between food and a city's inhabitant.

“Ich bin Hamburger/Berliner” and “Ich bin aus Hamburg/Berlin” are both correct.

The second one (“aus” = “from”) would not make sense for JFK's phrase, though.

If JFK's pulic relations managers had been very smart, it's possible that it was not a mistake at all, because it fits very well to the beloved American accent and it made that phrase even more famous.

In those days, some American WWII leftovers used to cultivate their accent for popularity reasons in music and showbiz.

Nowadays some lie “I'm Canadian” for security reasons.

“Dallas” got more points (24) than “Berlin” (1+1) for the JFK topic.

fatPhil, thx for the other e2-e4!

  • Ruben Berenguel at 2007-12-21

I had the problem of not appending “opening” or “defence”… If I had… I was about to put sex as a chess opening too. I will try it sometime FatPhil… but my girlfriend doesn't know how to play chess :)

  • slaapgraag at 2007-12-21

Ruben, i had the same problem, just 'sicilian' and stuff like that…

  • FatPhil at 2007-12-21

'defence' was a minefield as there are two spellings - the English way, and the wrong way. So I also left it off and hoped that other people would both detect that issue and also apply the “shorter is better” rule. “Resign” was my joke/experiment entry, I genuinely thought more people would go for e2-e4.

Ruben - please don't invite me to make crap puns on the word “mate”!

  • mongoose at 2007-12-21

'defence' is the correct way to spell the verb which means “to remove or tear down a fence”

    =P

  • Paavo Pirinen at 2007-12-21

    Mine goes boom. I die.

My crappy english - I did not even know to be afraid. Wikipedia (from which I even might have cut & pasted my answer, dammit) redirects 'Sicilian Defense' to 'Sicilian Defence', so at least it will be the right spelling.

Maybe we should just agree that the chess opening gets it's name from sicilian way of removing fences. All would be happy, no?

    mate … sex … hehheh..

oh. And I nearly tried '1.e4' too. Seems 'e2-e4' might be a bit more usual way of saying it.

  • FatPhil at 2007-12-21

Mongoose, you can't stick your tongue out until your language actually attains the consistency which Noah recommended.

'Fence' and 'defence' have *identical* etymological roots (one being derived from the other) - why do you perversely change one into an 's', and the other not?

Let's return to repeated top ten lists ;)

  • Ed Collins at 2008-02-16

I've been taking a break from playing but I played this game because it seemed interesting to me.

I noticed several three-letter words right there on that page. For example, there was USE, TOP, OUR…

“For succesful game you must USE the same expressions as other players.”

“TOP 10 players” / “TOP 10 players of last 7 games”

“Thanks for playing on OUR website”

… and so I decided to go with those. Alas, that wasn't the way to go. Combined, those three words only scored a total of 11 points. Still, I guess I should be content with 5th place.

  • MichaeI X at 2008-02-17

    Yes, you should…

Compare to me with a similar strategy:

“There's is a NEW game every DAY”

new(10) and day(12) were my highest scores, resulting in a total of 54 points and 67th place ;)

  • FatPhil at 2008-02-17

I agree with Ed, it was a very interesting category. Shame about the most commonly used 3 letter word not being accepted, though. I used the same logic as Ed, but missed many of the words that he plucked out. At least I got new(10) and day(12).

  • MichaeI X at 2008-02-22

    Ro, don't be too disappointed.

Those onepointers are good answers. Just consider that humans (at least the GoE players here) are rather narrow-minded and prefer enumerations over associations.

    (Ro's algorithm seems great, FatPhil)

  • FatPhil at 2008-02-22

That category was quite well suited to RoRoRo, so I think 44th (out of 65) is better than he'll do on average. However, the current category is absolutely perfect for him. ;-)

I planned to have about 4 different strategies, for different types of game, and I've only programmed 2 of them so far. The easiest two, unfortunately. The other 2 types of game are really going to push my programming skills to the limit. Most unfortunately, the unwritten ones are the types of game that I expect to come up more often (such as straight enumerations). However, I'm not going to worry too much about that until I get back from boozingHHHHHH^Hmy holiday.

Yes, Bill. If the subject had been “10 Biggest Countries in Eastern Europe” there were slightly more ties for the first places.

I considered different answers as well, but guessed (correctly) that a simple country name would win against any other (geographic or historic or whatever) term like “stalin” or “iron curtain”. Especially as there are a number of players from the other side of that former curtain, who did not hear such terms in school.

Interesting though: Finland(2) is more east than the Czech Republic(21), which has the “complicated spelling” malus, too.

RoRoRo, you should avoid the crappy Google Sets, returning such strange entries like your 10 1-pointers. Michael - I was unable to think of a heuristic which could be generally applied, which would find anything sensible for RoRoRo to submit. I tried a few simple web searches, and couldn't find anything which was clearly a list (RoRoRo can detect many things that look like lists, even if they don't use ). And I refuse to give him any assistance for a single game, so basically I let him fail horribly this game quite willingly. AI is hard, let's not pretend otherwise.

Why didn't ANYbody else list these?

  • Ed Collins at 2008-03-31

Ha! I got that beat! NINE of my answers were 1 pointers, with one 2-point answer!

Actually, I don't understand why yeti, bigfoot, loch ness monster, etc., were near the top. Those “animals” (and I use that term loosely) are well-known… everyone's heard of them.

Of course, if one DOES list COMPLETELY UNKNOWN animals, then you risk not having any matches at all, since no one else would know of them. And, of course, listing well-known animals (cat, dog, pig) wouldn't answer the expression, so you risk not getting any points at all if you go that route either.

I felt the trick would be to find a happy medium. So I went with ACTUAL animals that most people aren't familiar with but are not completely unknown:

LIGER (the offspring of a male lion and female tiger)

TIGON (the offspring of a male tiger and female lion)

ZONKEY (the offspring of a donkey and zebra)

ZORSE (the offspring of a horse and a zebra)

ZONY (the offspring of a pony and a zebra)

ZEBROID (the offspring of a zebra and any equid)

CAMA (the offspring of a camal and llama)

GROLAR and PIZZLY (the offspring of Grizzly Bears and a Polar Bears)

LEOPON (the offspring of a male leopard and a female lion)

WOLPHIN (the offspring of a dolphin and a killer whale)

Photos of all of these animals are widely available on the web. (My favorite is the LIGER, the world's largest cat.)

And speaking of LIGER, the other person who listed it allowed me to score 11 points and saved me the embarrassment of being tied for last with RoRoRo! Thanks!!

    < everyone's heard of them.

Since “known” in the sense of fame leads to a paradox (none of us are going to enter animals we've not heard of), it seemed better to take “known” in the sense of scientifically studied. Hence yeti and sasquatch, no examples of which have been written up by zoologists.

Griffin, chimera, jackalope and kraken are good answers, in the unicorn vein. I'm kind of glad I didn't think of them.

  • Ed Collins at 2008-04-10

Sometimes I do poorly because I play the game “in reverse” and I forget that you just can't do that with this game.

For example, if this game were played “in reverse” and you had to come up with an EXPRESSION from a list of given answers, the answers:

suede shoes, ribbon, whale, moon, jeans, my mood, man group

would probably easily make you come up the expression “things that are blue.”

Compare that with these “in reverse” answers for the same expression:

paint, flowers, water, car, ocean, eyes, shirt, lake

The bonus round for a former game show here in the US (The $20,000 Pyramid) would do this exact thing. A word or expression would appear to one player, (usually a celebrity) and that player had to come up with and name as many items aspossible that fit that expression. The second player, the contestant, would try to guess what this expression was, based upon the items named.

The game involved doing this for six different expressions, with a total time limit of 60 seconds. If all expressions were correctly identified in that time period, the contestant would win the big money.

In the above example, I doubt anyone would think of “things that are blue” from the second set of answers. In “The $20,000 Pyramid” game, those would be considered bad answers for that expression. And that's were I often mess up… I often come up with an answer or two in this game that would be a great “reverse” answer, but is not a good “Empathy” answer.

  • Chaosu ★ at 2008-06-19

Does it have anything to do with sex?

  • ypercube at 2008-06-19

It doesn't but why did you think that others would choose this word?

If we exclude the “words”, “that”, “have”, “nothing”, “to”, “do”, “with”, “sex”, top words were:

    love (15)

    food (11)

    work (9)

    game (8)

    empathy (7)

    religion (6)

    ---

    mozart (5)

    virgin (5)

    sleep (5)

    ---

    male (4)

    man (4)

    woman (4)

    marriage (4)

    nun (4)

    priest (4)

    female (4)

    death (4)

    ---

and many words with 3 points.

From these i'd say that most people did stick to the topic.

  • Chaosu ★ at 2008-06-19

    directly associated:

love virgin male man woman female marriage

associated easily with one additional word:

    sleep -> bed

    so we are left with:

food work game empathy mozart nun priest death and many other words with 3 points

so from all words above 3 points, on topic were: 8/25

  • ypercube at 2008-06-19

I would put “nun” and “priest” in your first category as they are though to have denied sex.

That leaves only six words on topic by your definition of “on topic”.

Another one would argue that “food”, “work” and “death” could be associated too (perhaps with a less straight association).

That leaves us with only three words on topic by your definition of “on topic”.

Have you heard of the “smallest strange number” paradox?

  • Benjamin Hellouin at 2008-06-19

The fact that all numbers are strange, because if not, the smallest that is not strange would have the property of being the smallest nonstrange number, that's to say a bit strange?

  • Greck at 2008-06-19

it's not a surprise that THAT was a 1-pointer answer!

  • FatPhil at 2008-06-19

News flash! RoRoRo didn't chose 'sex'!

    love (15), female (4), male (4), penis (3), woman (4), man (4), intercourse (3), bed (3), orgasm (3), gender (2)

So he didn't do very well at keeping 'on topic'.

  • Judy at 2008-06-19

Ro's robot mind locked on SEX, and he did very well in his choices.

  • Chaosu ★ at 2008-06-19

According to the rules I was thinking what reasonable thinking will lead to succesfull answers, those denying sex, connected straight, but was my guess for reasonable thinking. While food work and death were not too straight to match my guess.

I already wrote how many words were left with my definition of 'on topic' so I don't see in (mis)repeating what I said .

No I haven't heard about that paradox (at least its english names doesn't seem familiar).
