Top 10 players of last 7 games
  • Richard at 2006-02-25

I'm wondering about the way the top 10 players of the last 7 games is calculated. Currently it just adds the points, but this doesn't really indicate top 10 because some games are get more total points than others.

Would it make more sense to have a formula like:

    (yourScore1/topScore1 + yourScore2/topScore2 + etc)*100?

  • Ed Collins at 2006-02-25

Yes, I think that would be a better way of reflecting the top 10 players over the past 7 games, for the reason you mention.

Some games score more than other games for two reasons… one, because of the expression used (some are easier than others) and two, because of the number of players who play that game is often different.

I think your solution would take care of both of these points.

    What does everyone else think?

  • Fai at 2006-02-25

I agree with the concept but an easier formula would just be

    Position1 + position2 + …

the lower your score the higher your rank.

  • Ed Collins at 2006-02-25

Fai, that's excellent. I like it.

    With that method, my score over the past seven games (after MOUNTAIN) would be 238. (Position 13 + 21 + 63 + 30 + 69 + 5 + 37)

  • Ed Collins at 2006-02-25

    And if I DIDN'T play today, I'm guessing my score would be 279 (13 + 21 + 63 + 30 + 69 + 5 + 78. (78 because there were 77 players who did play today.)

  • Paavo Pirinen at 2006-02-26

Just out of mad interest I decided to test different methods of scoring. My calculations may be all wrong and I probably have missed someone (I counted poits only for players I thought might get to my lists), but as an examples they should do fine.

Seven days from 'space' to 'wolf':

    Positions, average

    1 Szandor 9.14

    8 anwi 27.58

    9 Iluvatar 30.95

    7 Henrik Sj?l 74.94

    8 Fai 73.16

    9 Jen 72.78

    10 Paavo Pirinen 72.32

I found a list to which i belong to! ..or just counted wrong.

There are some shifts, but most players are same in every list.

I think system we have now is well good enough. I also think every table above is somewhat sensible alternative.

  • Paavo Pirinen at 2006-02-26

Ofcourse I counted wrong. Marius should ofcourse be there in the last list between Syl and anwi, with 75.52. Don't ask how I lost him. I should get some sleep.

  • Bill Collins at 2006-02-27

    Sounds good to me.

“how the top 10 players of the last 7 games is calculated:”

    beautiful.

  • Ed Collins at 2006-02-27

Below is a ranking of all 31 players who participated in EACH of the past 7 games, (from “drink” through “pizza,” inclusive) based upon their final position in each game.

To clarify, the formula used is: Position_in_Game_X + Position_in_Game_Y… = Total_Score. The lower the score, the better the performance.

(Note: The figures were obtained via a quick & dirty computer program I wrote.)

    1) 105 David Scott

    2) 111 Szandor

    3) 134 Peter van der Walle

    4) 150 anwi

    5) 156 Pawel Grabowski

    6) 168 Henrik Sj?l

    7) 196 Marius Hals?r

    8) 199 fearlessleader

    9) 217 Paavo Pirinen

    10) 223 luk

    11) 224 Ed Collins

    12) 230 Richard

    13) 232 Syl

    14) 234 Fai

    15) 235 Sheila

    16) 245 Hartmut

    17) 272 Iluvatar

    18) 274 Jen

    19) 290 Lori Andreas

    19) 290 passenger

    21) 302 Scot

    22) 312 BlackLab

    23) 323 kpato

    24) 330 unsusto

    25) 356 Bill

    26) 357 Agustin

    27) 405 Yvonne

    28) 413 BIG BAD WOLF

    29) 415 Rohitha Fernando

    30) 445 Judy

    31) 512 neil

Please let me know if you see any errors.

  • Judy at 2006-03-03

Now, let's all add up our scores when our word

    was used as a singular…or a plural.

  • Bill Collins at 2006-03-10

That would take to long Mom.

  • Paavo Pirinen at 2006-03-13

Past weeks (cartoon characters - China) statistics. Probably quite correct ones this time. To whom it may concern.

Top 20 7-day players according to proportioned positions.

Agh. That position*(100/number of partisipants)/7 formula.

    1. David Scott 7,3

    2. Ed Collins 17,35

    3. Paavo Pirinen 20,5

    4. Trevor Green 23,22

    5. Woff 23,44

    6. anwi 24,3

    7. Marco (DeSangre) 25,35

    8. Richard 29,6

    9. passenger 30,24

    10. BIG BAD WOLF 30,45

    11. Pawel Grabowski 31,28

    12. Jeppe Snell 32,39

    13. Syl 36,25

    14. gamestalker 36,52

    15. Marius Hals?r 39,26

    16. Fai 39,48

    17. Robin 39,96

    18. Sheila 40,76

    19. Figilano 44,51

    20. BlackLab 52,22

David Scott's average position was 6,71 and he got averagely 92,32% of the score of the winner. Quite amazing. I'm holding the third position and still my average position is 17,57 and I get only 80,59% of the score of the winner.

Nobody hit all top ten words this on weeks days, but BIG BAD WOLF got closest, getting 290 on videogames, while top ten words would have scored 297. Farthest away from perfect list the winner was left on 'bought'. Ricardo won with 287 points, while top ten words scored together 339.

As a whole, most points would be given if everybody voted for same words (number of 10*players^2). Closest to this we got with Einstein, getting 27,88% of the maximum. Farthest we were left with videogames, getting only 17,96 of the maximum.

Average score of an average player has been 184,19. Average score of a winner has been 311,71.

Hum. What else would anyone want to know (except different scoring for different plural/singular rules)?

  • Ed Collins at 2006-03-13

Paavo, please note for any future statistics there are two players each with the name “Neil” that have been playing Empathy.

Neil (User ID #11289) plays most of the time.

Neil (User ID #11515) has played just 8 games, the last one on March 9th.

  • Paavo Pirinen at 2006-03-14

Yeah. They both played on the boys day, and neither played on videogames day. I didn't check the id:s, but getting them right seemed not that big thing since neither was mentioned on my list.

  • Paavo Pirinen at 2006-03-21

Well. Let's do another unofficial week count. After all I might never do better.

What's in pockets - Movies. Probably quite correct. Still to whom it may concern.

Top 20 7-day players according to position thingy again.

    1. Paavo Pirinen 16,32

    2. Ed Collins 21,43

    3. Marius Halsor 23,45

    4. kpato 24,16

    5. Syl 24,8

    6. klaashaas 26,01

    7. BlackLab 27,32

    8. BIG BAD WOLF 27,37

    9. Pawel Grabowski 27,76

    10. Marco (DeSangre) 28,68

    11. juane 30,24

    12. anwi 34,3

    13. Robin 34,32

    14. Abigail 34,58

    15. Rick Landis 35,21

    16. unsusto 36,45

    17. Jen 36,93

    18. osucowboys 38,74

    19. Hartmut 40,65

    20. zorya 41,51

On furniture we got amazing 41,58% of all the points we could have got. In other words an average score was 395,02, and if everybody would have voted for same words, we would still have got only 950 per player.

  • Bill Collins at 2006-03-21

    Thanks for the update!

  • Ed Collins at 2006-03-21

Paavo, you've already done better. In the most recent 7 games (“favorite empathy game” thru “vegetables”) your seven-day performance is even better… 15.624 according to my calculations. That's STILL better than my performance (18.529) despite the fact that during the past seven days I came in 1st place twice, fourth place once, and sixth place once.

    Good work.

  • Hjallti ★ at 2006-03-21

I'd rather see scores about your best 10 (or 30) games (position, absolute score, relative score (to winner), % optimal score). Since I rarely play 7 days in a row the current scores would deny me if I would play better then I do anyway :-)
