Which Gipf game is the best?

    What do you think?

Which Gipf game is the best?

  • bloempje at 2004-09-14

The only Gipf game I don't like is Tamsk, because of the time element. The others are equally fun to me, but I play Dvonn, Yinsh and Zertz the most.

    Yinsh :-)

Gipf is special because it gives a very classical feel while being a very new game. This game certainly gives CHess-like feelings.

Tamsk is really unique with the pieces also being clocks. Unfortunately unplayable in tournaments.

Zertz is a simple yet real explosive game with enormous depth. Close to unplayable for computers/programs. Studying and learning patterns in this game gives Trax-feelings but with more depth!

Dvonn is very fun to play. The cutting off groups of pieces is a very surprising and attractive element when player start to play this game. Also strategically very important when you learn to play it well.

Yinsh is again easy to learn and quite attractive. However, it seems hard to detect a “basic” strategy or tactics for this game. This might put off some mid sports enthousiasts that are used to learn to play a game beyond beginners level in short time:)

Overall, to me personally, Gipf and Zertz are the best games. Although I like Dvonn most. Probably because I've gotten best at Dvonn:) Tamsk is innovative but ruled out because it cannot be played in tournaments. Yinsh looks again great, plays well, but hasn't attracted me as other Gipf-project games have.

    For those curious:

I've also written a Gipf program that (my claim) is able to beat every human. I have not unveiled it yet because I still await the first computer Olympiad challenge.

I've also written a Zertz program that plays reasonable. I personally cannot beat it, but I expect experienced players still can.

I think ZERTZ is the more deep game of the series!

GIPF is the one I like more because I played it more!

DVONN is funny to play but rather harder to master really effectively.

GIPF and DVONN can also be found on www.boiteajeux.net, a french site of game playing. Soon, ZERTZ and YINSH will be implemented!

    See ya all!

Maybe a little bit offtopic for this forum, but here is a link to Gipf for one: http://gf1.sourceforge.net/

(Rather old but still a very nice and strong gipf programm, allowing games between human/computer vs human/computer with all variations of gipf.)

I found it many years too late, I guess :)

Do you even know it Jan? I'm sure, you do!

Jan, you say that TAMSK is “unfortunately, unplayable in tournaments.” For those of us who are new to the GIPF project games, as well as those of us who haven't played many tournaments (except on sites like this), would you please explain WHY?

Do you mean unplayable at all, in ANY tournaments? Do you just mean on this server (or other turn-based servers), because the time element cannot be implemented?

    Not niggling - just curious.

    Thanks!

klaus, i know gf1, my program beats it easily:)

labradors: tamsk is unplayable in live tournaments because players would certainly not be able to agree which of 2 hourglasses was empty first…
