why can't a player offer a draw in Dvonn??
  • Ray Garrison at 2006-12-12

I was just wondering, does anyone know why a player can not offer a draw in Dvonn?? In some games, such as breakthrough or Amazons, a draw is impossible, so I understand why there is not a draw offer option. But in Dvonn, a draw is certainly possible, so why not make the offer of a draw an option? Any thoughts?

I think draw offers are only possible in chess and twixt. These are games which could take unreasonably long time to finish after the draw was clear to both players.

I think a draw is reached in Dvonn only in 1-2 % of all games (at least, that is the case for my games). In these games, I can only very rarely see the draw coming until just before the final end (2 moves per player left or something like that) and then the use in speeding up play for being able to offer a draw is very little. Only those players that are perfect in endplay (or are cheating by using a computer program) and assume their opponent does the same, would need this option. I count on my opponent making mistakes also in the last few moves, and if they dont, I am sure I will be the one making these mistakes (even though I am not the worst of all Dvonn players).

Hmm. I can see the offering of a draw as a strategic move. The opponent might think it's a good option, but he/she just might miss some odd moves ahead in the game giving him/her the bigger chance of a win. If the opponent just misses that, you might be lucky.. But then it becomes a more tactical game of a different kind.

The only time the player would use the draw offering is when they are losing, so why not concede instead? Like Xander said, real draws are really rare and only assured in the last few moves, so there is no need for this option.
