reversi championship
  • erwin vd berg at 2004-04-09

when does the reversi championship starts? i'm waiting for over months now, how does it works?

  • Tasmanian Devil at 2004-04-09

It starts one week after all the groups finish. Four groups are still unfinished, as you can see here.

  • Roel at 2004-04-28

A new championship has started. Good luck to all.

To my surprise me and alkosan are degraded to level 2, and we two were to only two who drew against the champion.

My question is what is required to get into level 1 championship next time? Is winning in league 2 neccesary or can you earn it by winning other tournaments or does a top 10-rating also suffice?

  • Tasmanian Devil at 2004-04-28

You were degraded because you were not in top-5. To get back into league 1, you have to be in top-2 of league 2. You can't advance on rating since you have already played in league 1.

(Some may of course question how interesting it is to play in league 1 in the reversi championship these days. ;-))

  • klaashaas at 2004-04-28

Yep, the 8x8 championship is rotten. I can't wait for the 10x10 championship to start. I hope all the good players will start playing 10x10, so we can set up an interesting and fair championship!

  • Roel at 2004-04-29

Getting number two in the league is possible and mustn't be too hard.

10x10 is super although i have not finished any game yet and am looking forward to puzzle out the more complex endgames.

  • klaashaas at 2004-04-29

I noticed previous champ Nicky kept the honour to himself and resigned the in first move against the 'champion'. Excellent! I wish more people would consider doing that.

  • Tasmanian Devil at 2004-04-29

I find his resigning strategy to be a bit half-hearted, if you know what I mean. :p

  • klaashaas at 2004-04-29

    Euh, no, I don't.

My motives not to play this 'champ' last championship were not to recognise him/her as reversi player. Besides that, it also saved me some frustration :-) Playing such players is useless anyway, if you know what I mean.

  • Tasmanian Devil at 2004-04-29

OK, you missed my point then. There is now a second “unbeatable” player in 1st league.

  • klaashaas at 2004-04-29

Oh, yes definately missed your point:-) It's what I've heard, but I've not played him/her, and I've not looked at him/her games yet. Anyway, the 8x8 championship is rotten.

I've invited the 8x8 former champ to a 10x10 game a few weeks ago, but he/she wasnt interested in it. I wonder why :-)

  • Arnoud Meijer at 2004-04-29

If someone can play 8x8 well, won't be a reason that he/she can play also 10x10 well… I really suck in 10x10, because my mid-game is very bad, and that;s very important in a 10x10-game.. So i think you never now 100% sure if someone really is a good player or not… :)

  • movieloverxxl at 2004-05-01

Arnoud, you suck in both ;-)

  • erwin vd berg at 2004-05-02

hmmm, not good news….my first championship here and i havn't played one move of it and now already there are people hoe ruinate it for everyone! when does it stop!

My opinion alway's was that you can live with it or don't play. now my pation really goes to the zero point…

I think there must come hard rules, like ip-ban?

  • agoui (limited edition) at 2004-05-02

Today I resigned from two of my games in the championship and I am still considering what to do with the rest of my games. I agree too that playing in the reversi championship these days is not much fun. May be the second division is more fun!

I also feel that even though that we can never be sure 100% about cheaters something should be done about them (I don't know what though).

  • erwin vd berg at 2004-05-02

    patience

  • Krzysztof (Chris) at 2004-05-04

What is wrong with championship in reversi? Why it is rotten? I am in 5th league only but I am very interested what so strange is doing in 1st division that people resign in first move… I really do'nt understand…

  • klaashaas at 2004-05-04

If there were poles involved, it would have been called the Polish way of winning :-)

(I'm just kidding. Poland has great and fair reversi players :-)

Anyway, there are players that are using ai-assistance in their games. Because of this, winning the championship doesn't mean anything anymore. And becoming 2nd (or 3rd) doesn't mean anything either, because those players give very obvious presents to some players (Roel was the lucky one to 'receive' a draw in last championship). This makes the championship a flaw (it would be less flawed if ALL the fair players resigned at their first move against the players who use ai-aid, but that's up to every individual).

But, besides all this, the championship is still alot of fun! I've just finished a great game against the Tasmanian Devil in the 2nd league! And now we have the cheat-proof 10x10 :-)

  • Krzysztof (Chris) at 2004-05-05

and how you became know that they use ai-support?

BTW I even did not known that there are STRONG reversi programs….

  • Tasmanian Devil at 2004-05-06

Othello (reversi) is one of the games that current computer programs can play best. The best freeware program is WZebra. It plays far better than any human and is used by most strong players to analyze games and study openings. One can also play against it but that's rather discouraging. ;-) Its strength is based upon serious research on Othello position evaluation, deep search, early full solve, and many thousand analyzed games of high standard including self-generated ones.

  • beppi at 2004-05-14

I'm sorry to say that I don't agree in resigning against cheaters. Maybe I'm wrong but I'll pay them with their same money. First and only time I'll do it.

    Beppi.

  • klaashaas at 2004-05-15

But Beppi, if you do that, and you don't lose, then you will have one or two points more than your opponents who refuse to use a program. Isn't that unfair? If everyone has the same result against cheaters, then the position in the championship still has some value (number 4 has done better than number 5, etc.) Now it's possible that a fair player who has played better than you goes down a league, because of your extra points.

Of course, this is every players own decision, but I cetainly regret it if fair players are going to use programs too :-/

  • Arnoud Meijer at 2004-05-15

The idea is nice, everyone resign, but the question is… Does everyone know who there cheaters are…? At least one doesn't know it, and that will be me. I really don't know who the cheaters are, because i don't follow all these people, and I never watch afterwards a game. So if you can tell me who these cheaters are, according to you, i will resign next time :)

  • klaashaas at 2004-05-15

Don't bother, Arnoud, you're not going to get any points against them anyway, if you don't use a program :-) But if you resign at move 1, you don't lose any rating points either.

  • Robin at 2004-05-15

There is also fabio from Italy.

  • Robin at 2004-05-15

Sorry, last post should have been in another topic.

  • erwin vd berg at 2004-05-15

is that so, if you resign at the first move your opponent doesn't get the points?

  • Tasmanian Devil at 2004-05-15

    Yes.

  • beppi at 2004-05-15

What kind of argument is: if I cheat against cheaters the tournament is not fair? Isn't it unfair anyway? What does a second place mean in a unfair tournament? Maybe resigning is the best thing, but this won't make those people stop cheating. Only by beating them they will lose their only objective: win single matches. Cheaters don't care to win by resign or by result. And what I sould say about other players that won games against cheaters by cheater's resign? Unfortunately any championship's result now is unfair, whatever it will be. And finally, who will ever say to new players to resign at move number 1 against those ones because we think that they are cheaters?

I think that the only thing we can do is to WIN against cheaters. They will lower their rating and stop. They will win against weak players and lose against others and the tournament will be fair.

I know the problem is complex, but I don't see other solutions, and, anyway, I won't resign now! If the majority of other players think this way, I will adapt and resign at move 1 in the next championship.

    Beppi.

  • alkosan at 2004-08-18

victory. bishop aka karla evans is not in the reversi championship anymore

  • agoui (limited edition) at 2004-08-18

Cinic Kim is gone too! So sometimes rough “talking” works even with cheater. Good luck to all the players who take part in the championship, especially in League 1.

  • detasio at 2004-09-11

Poor jeroen. he lost our game i think that he told me that he would be working this months,i suposse he dont have time. he could tell to return to the game where we finish like in itsyourturn.

Otherwise i think that we have lost a clear candidate to the championship.

  • Tasmanian Devil at 2004-09-11

Well, at least he won a monthly cup even though he timed out in the last remaining game. :p

  • detasio at 2004-09-12

yeah but his rating is now about 1600.everybody wait that he return to the top coz he have to stay there.

  • detasio at 2004-10-23

    grats jonny. well done

  • detasio at 2005-03-11

grats Jonas. Well done. u win a very close tournament, only we need to see the results.

  • Jonas at 2005-03-13
