Delaying games
  • Marius Halsor at 2003-09-26

I know that Hex can seem like a complicated game to some. It is therefore not proper to ask people to resign just because one can see the outcome oneself. However, some games should definitely be obvious to everyone. Sometimes there is a reason for delaying the game, like trying to stay on the top10 until the championship starts. That's ok with me - part of the system.

In other cases, however, like this game, the players are simply delaying the next round of the monthly cup. I guess it's not a big issue, and the second round will surely start sooner or later, but am I out of line in asking people to try not to stall the games for no apparent reason? The same players do have other similar games. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

Just because you can see the outcome, doesn't mean the players can. After all, blue just made a losing move :-)

Anyway, I'd like to repeat a suggestion made a long time ago: In most cases it's not necessary to finish all the games in the first round before the second round begins. For example, in the May tournament in Hex, the outcome of the two remaining games won't affect who plays in the second round. I think it's a good idea to start the next round as soon as the line-up for that round is unambigously determined.

Then the distance in time between the first and second round will be shorter, and it will be more difficult to stall the next rounds, as in the example Marius gave.

    i agree with u all

    AGREED

  • Alan Turing at 2003-09-29

Is it just me, or do we all seem to be in agreement on this? ;)

  • na_wspak at 2003-09-29

i agree with u Turing there is the agreement

  • Alan Turing at 2003-09-29

Do all agree that there is agreement?

  • Marius Halsor at 2003-09-29

So, there seems to be a concensus here. I kinda lost track of what everyone agreed on along the way. Probably it's the fact that next round of monthly cups should start once the previous rounds is unambigously determined.

Richard, is there any way you could make this happen? Seems like lots of people AGREE that it would be a good thing :-)

    I am not convinced yet.

I would prefer a system in which delaying the next round of a mc was not posible (not that I know how I would implement such a system) but that's not what we have here. If someone has earned a berth in the next round and wants to delay the start until after they pass some crunch time at work or school, I can't blame for that. And I don't think it's fair to change the rules in the middle.

I don't find that game delaying the next round, maybe to you the outcome was clear, to others it might wasn't clear…obviously it wasn't to the players (looking at the continuation of the game).

This is not a hex game, but this is what i call delaying:

look at when the last move was made in game
