World Boardgaming Championships

The 2005 WBC in Lancaster, Pennsylvania USA, recently ended. Over a thousand boardgamers competed to see who would win a wooden plaque proclaiming them champion for a year. Acquire, Circus Maximus, Euphrat & Tigris, Hammer of the Scots, Monsters Ravage America, Rail Baron, Settlers of Catan, Titan, and Wizard's Quest were just a few of the over 100 games played. But no abstracts were in the lineup. Maybe that's all the more reason to introduce one!

I am seriously considering running (and playing in) a Twixt tourney at the 2006 WBC. Would anyone be interested? I am hopeful that attendance will exceed most tournaments that have been held in Germany, England, and Italy. The 2006 schedule has not yet been posted, or even where it will be next year. They are still working on posting the results from this year. But it will probably be in early August in Lancaster again.

    I'd be interested.

I'm not in your league (and never will be, I'm sure) but I think Twixt is a fascinating game. It appears the game has enough depth to keep me interested in it, and still learning from it, the rest of my life. I only discovered it a few years ago (has it been that long already?) and I wish I had discovered it earlier. (Like 30 years earlier!)

I'm nowhere near Pennsylvania (Southern California is currently my home) but if the tournament were large enough and if class sections were implemented (so that my games would be competitive… and thus more fun) I'd take the time off work and make the trip out there. The idea of playing in a large Twixt tourney really interests me. (I play in large chess tourneys regularly. I'd love to play in a room with a couple hundred or more other Twixt players!)

Hey, you know I'd drive from North Carolina to Pennsylvania for that. Even if I had to pick up some crazy person in Virginia along the way ;-) And my wife would be even more excited about it than I would, though not for the same games.

    David,

Yes, regarding your personal message to me, I do know that no OTB rating system exists for Twixt. My comment was more of a fantasy of the thought of playing in a large Twixt tourney, for large cash prizes, in a room with hundreds and hundreds of other Twixt players!

Instead of waiting for the next WBC in 2006, why not work on getting a small group of players to meet, say, in Las Vegas the week after Christmas, for a Twixt tourney?

I pick Vegas only because many people are already familiar with the city, rooms are usually plentiful, good deals can often be found on airline tickets and there are other things to do there… in between Twixt games. Also, the week after Christmas many people have off from work.

I think I'd be up for that, too.

I would certainly attend WBC if there were a Twixt tournment there. Pete99
