Counting problem
  • Jean Dufot at 2003-02-28

In game #30612 I can't succeed in understanding the counting offered by the program. On the black territory, larger than the white one, there are a few white dead stones that seem to make neutral the whole zone … So, i was naively thinking i was about winning this game and I'm offered a defeat. Could you please confirm my personal count : White 51 territory points + 8.5 komi=59.5 points and Black 55 territory points + 7 dead white stones + 5 prisoners=67 points ? Thanks by advance from a beginner as enthusiastic for go game as for Little Golem.

The scoring was incorrect (but is now final, as it was accepted by both sides). With proper scoring you would have won by 7.5 points.

I've yet to finish a game where I was the one to “score”, so I don't know if score presented to you was wishful thinking on the part of your opponent or a mistake by the program. In the only game that had dead stones on the board where I was presented with a score, one of the obviously dead stones was marked as alive. In that case it didn't affect the outcome and I ddin't complain. But it seems vigilance is called for.

Thanks for your answer, David, but actually I did not accept this score. When I was offered it, I chose “count score” and in the message box, I wrote to my opponent the score I had counted, asking him if he would agree. He unfairly seized this opportunity to accept the previous game instead of resigning… Yet, during the game, he had admitted in different messages he had lost. This very morning (local time), I discover in the same time the game result, your reply in the forum :-), and a message from that person who pretends to be “sorry” when writing besides that the same misadventure happened to him last week. So the fairness would have required from him a resign for he precisely knew what would happen… Could you tell me please if it is possible to request the webmaster for changing a result? Thanks to everyone and special thanks to David. The world is not only populated by cheaters. ;-)

So what does “count score” do? And what should one do when presented with an incorrect socre?

BTW, my name is pronounced as “David” is in most European languages, but not in English. There is no good way to spell it in English so I use the letter for letter translation from the Hebrew (Dvd) rather than “David”.

When you are in 'count-mode', you can click on stones/groups which you think are dead. Then they will be marked dead. The system doesn't exactly know if and when a group is dead.

If, for some reason, the software doesn't count right, you can always play further (to close borders), I guess, and count after that.

Thanks to Klaashaas for this useful information. From now, there is a kind of people i'm thinking of who won't be able to pretend they are “sorry” to take benefit of their ignorance ;-)
