Tie? -- Both players have 20 moves left ...
  • Frank (frs) at 2003-04-21

In Amazon game 36846, move 52 both players have 20 moves left. But White has to move first …

Will that game be a win for Black? Or a tie?

Rules say: First player who can't move anymore, will lose the game. But I'm not sure, if it is implemented that way …

There's no “offer tie” button (like in chess), which might be an indicator (but not a proof) that a tie is not possible …

Does someone has more detailed information?

    Thanks. :)

It will be a win for Black. There is no tie in Amazons (at least in this site). Same situation has occured in my game #19274 against Taral. I lost :(

In 2 of my games against klaashaas ( 37207 and 48887) this situation also occured. We both won one game. Good thing there is no such thing as komi in Amazons (yet?). :)

There is no possibility of a tie in Amazons. It's a combinatorial game and it's finite so the game always ends within a set number of moves (max 92) and there is always a winner.

For those without a math background :

This means that the game has a limited number of moves and since the first player who can't move loses, there will have to be a loser declared eventually (and much sooner than 92 moves unless you're purposefully trying to play the longest game possible (which is a black win, BTW).

Often not much sooner, unless one player resigns. I find many of my games result in a position which, if the losing side kept playing, would take anywhere from 85 to 92 moves.
