Since the site does not support provisional ratings (new players are arbitrarily assigned an established rating of 1500), when I am paired with a new player rated 1500, my policy is to abort the game. This is because I have found that many new players rated 1500 are much stronger than that. I know the counter argument is that the new player eventually plays enough games so that their rating is accurate, but that does nothing for me when I have to play them when they are grossly underrated at 1500, thus unfairly being forced to risk a ton of rating points to a player whose true strength might be more like 1800.
