I wrote a first attempt to FAQ's. It might be good if 'experienced' players go through them. Especially native English speakers, since English is only my third language. You can mail mistakes to me (or to the webmaster), Or suggest things I forgot.
Looks good! My only complaint is that it might be tricky for new users to find it (under "Main" on the left menu). Heck, I remember when I first started playing on here, it took me awhile to figure out everything could be found in the menu on the left! :-)
I like this FAQ, it's written clear. But I don't understand one thing at all. You write: "A 2.dan player on this site, could be a European 5.dan player. Why?? You mean in 'real life'? It seems to me the same as to say: "A player with rating 2300 in chess could be a grandmaster", but is it surely nonsense. Maybe you wanted to give an example of relation between rating on this site and rating in 'real life', but this example seems to me to be confusing...
yeah, maybe...
I meant it the other way around... a grandmaster (with European 5dan rating) could have a rating of 2dan here, since his rating here is local to this site. In the chess example... a player with real rating 2678 could have here a rating of 2312 or so, just because of the game play.
That should be me :-) I got promoted to 3 dan a couple of weeks ago thou. And i will probably get to my real life rank (european 5 dan) in time, when more dan players will play on this site. With patience one can swim all over the ocean ;-)
1) I think somewhere in the FAQ the Sonnenborn tie-breaking procedure should be mentioned. 2) Instead of "Hex is a game invented seemingly simultaneous by some game theorist." it would be better written as "Hex was first invented by the Danish mathematician Piet Hein and then later, independently, by the American mathematician John Nash."
Of course I meant Sonneborn twice (that is why I didn't type in my first draft, I wanted those FAQ to be up, and didn't want to waste time). Maybe all suggestions for changes, and additions should be mailed internally to me... it would be easy. I'll try to make a second version, with those suggestions, and a some more on Reversi and GWG next week, or at least till the end of the month.
