I dont like these rules. They where introduced to make the short words in the corner have less influence on the game. The result is that long words in the corner decides the games. I am afraid we will have MANY games where the result is decided by a single word.

I suggest we go back to old rules as soon as possible. The game was much more predictible with the old rules.

We haven't had a chance to see how it will work out yet.
I don't think any games have ended, in fact most are barely underway. With the old rules often a single word made the game- when on the double AND triple squares. It is much too early to say one way or another, but I am enjoying the new challenges.

i agree with judy
its still to early to tell
and another advatage to the new rules is the corners know will be more open for the bigger words

one game i had the top two rows of letters was nothing but vowels with the old rules
imm hoping with the new rules this will be avoided

There is no need to wait. Have a glance at the games underway and take a peek at the record list. We are going to be faced with lots of extremely high scoring words now.

I agree that with old rules some double/triple could decide the game. There is no reason to expect this to change to the better. I would rather say it is likely to change to the worse. Most of the words on the hiscore list have more than 7 letters. It would mean they would simply score more under new rules.

There is NO reason to beleive the new rules will prevent clustering of vowels or consonants.

I have been thinking about other changes to the game and will post some suggestions when I have worked through them.

I think we should wait until the championship is done, except if the game is split into 2 different games... oGWG and nGWG, for instance such that players can choose to play them both or either one. Anyway a great scoring word can be countered by another, although that the change that the best word decides the game is indeed bigger.

We will anyhow have to wait until ch.ship are finished. Changing rules in ongoing games is of course out of the question.

I only want to keep the discussion alive. What worries me is that the arguments for making changes are not met by the rule change applied. I have some ideas for making this game more interesting and will play through some games on my own to see how they will work before I post my ideas here.

Tore, if you need to test play your ideas for different rules, I volunteer to play some unrated games with you.

My observation of the new rules so far: Using the old rules, this was the proper order when looking for a word: 1) A word using both triple tiles. 2) A word using a triple and a double tile. 3) A word using both double tiles. 4) A long word using a triple tile. 5) A long word using a double tile. 6) A short word using a triple tile. 7) A short word using a double tile. 8) A long word in the middle of the board. 9) A short word in the middle of the board........ Using the new rules, this is the proper order to look for a word: 1) A word using both triple tiles. 2) A word using a triple and a double tile. 3) A word using both double tiles. 4) A long word using a triple tile. 5) A long word using a double tile. 6) A long word in the middle of the board. 7) A short word using a triple tile. 8) A short word using a double tile. 9) A short word in the middle of the board........ ("Long word" refers to a word of about seven, eight, or nine tiles. "In the middle of the board" refers to a word that does not use a bonus tile.)....... Summary: "A long word in the middle of the board" moved up two notches (from #8 to #6). All other orders stayed the same. I believe this accomplished the goal that was set... giving more credit towards longer words. HOWEVER, it remains to be seen if TOO MUCH value was given.

Agreed. To some extent:)

It is true that the order of the words changed the way you describe, but at the same time the difference between the words found in each group increased. In fact it altered so much that it is only on rare occasions you will look for long words in the middle of the board. I would say it is even more seldom than before.

Whoops: I just realized that with the new rules, Item #4: "A long word using a triple tile" also now moves up on the above list. I just scored 66 points for the sniveled. (It used a triple tile.) Obviously, a long word on a triple (multiply your score by 6) is worth more than the average word (five or six tiles) on either a triple-double (also multiply it by 6 but the words not as long) or a double-double (multiply it by 4). I'm wondering if my original preference of only giving bonuses to long words THAT DON'T ALREADY USE A BONUS is best.

I like the new rules
it makes for more competition

i agree that the bonus should only be on long words found in the middle
but 5 letters or longer
not just 7 or longer
so if the bonus is added to only no doubled and tripled tiles then it should be on 5 letter words and longer

if not then the new rules are great

I have been pondering about the rules in GWG for awhile and have 3 ideas for the game. I will post them as separate messages in new threads. Two of them are rule-changes. The third is more a suggestion for a new game built on the GWG game.

---------------------------------------------------------

The reason for my proposals are based on the following: Under todays rules the difference between words of 6 or 7 letters are too big. I see no reason why KWANZA should give 15 points and KWANZAS 32. The difference is simply too big. In my opinion the old ruleset was much better, but since most people here wanted a change I have given two ideas that reduces the significance of the corner tiles compared to center tiles without having the unwanted side effects of todays rules.
