Would be nice if those that want to use scabble dictionaries and take three days to move and need and want to win that bad, stick to playing in the tourneys and not those who want a good honest game.Or at least fess up to it when someone ask u...

I am not sure if I get what you mean here. I dont think you should be annoyed if an opponent utilizes his time limit in the games. After all this a turn-based server with set time limits. ----- There is alsp the possibility to blacklist certain players. It is not documented how this works however. ----- Please tell us Richard.

Well i agree with Gabby if you use dictionaries its cheating to win .When you write a exam you cant sit with your text open for help.If you want to win that bad play those like you .The rest of us will play for our enjoyment because we can't compete with a dictionary.

everyone has access to dictionarys
online and off
computers can use the word list
webbies can use dictionary.com or scrabble.com as well as puter users
some use scrabble hand held dictionaries
some use the old stanby paper back dictionaries
so I take it you would be happier finding basic words in the word game then to finding words with point value?
me I would rather go for points

Tore, if you click on a player's name, and then scroll down to below all the games & statistics, you'll see the bottom line is where you can blacklist someone.

hi akuti dodi,yes i like a challenge too .

hi akuti dodi, yes i do like a challenge too but the point i'm trying to make is that we that are new too the game dont know the ins and outs.i just played u and i enjoyed it how did i do without a dictionary?what we are saying when we ask if you are using a dictionary some dont fess up ,so i dont see the challenge points or no points .if you are both using it its fair and i dont see anything wrong with that.

Boy sunny, guess the truth must hurt if i am getting blacklisted for making a comment.I take it all of u have missed the point...It was the fact that people were dishonest when asked.I still feel if u are that desperate to win a game it is really quite funny...

First of all ... to blacklist .... go to the player info of that player scroll down, and you should find the link to blacklist. --------
Second, time limits are set rules for anyone, and people are allowed to use all 240 hours, then play some moves and let go to zero again... If you feel it is annoying play more games, and you won't even notice that some are played.
-------------
Third, the cheating is very hard to tell... In board games I learned as a kid that if I started a move a had to play it, here you are allowed to put a piece down, look at it and do something different... I took me while but I got used to it... but it is fair since all can do it. On the other hand all software should be banned.
-------------
For the word game it is much harder to call what's fair. I think using dictionary seems fair, also if it is online. Then online you can use the 'find'-function in some way, and that is using software...I stopped playing GWG because I was to confused how far you could go ... some dictionary sites allow you to find all anagrams of certain letters...

As for cheating in the word game, I do not think that useing a scrabble dictionary (on-line or off-line) is cheating. I use an on-line dictionary, and it is still a lot of "hard work" to win games. I have a whole notebook filled with word games and words that I found. It is actually so much work, I'm trying to finnish the word games that I have then not play them anymore. I don't have the time anymore to do a lot of searching - which is what is needed if you want to win. (And I know I still have 2 more monthly cup rounds that have not started yet.) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Anyway, what I think gabbybrook (or anyone) should do if they do not want to play people that use a scrabble dictionary is when you put a game in the waiting room, put "Please no scrabble dictionary" in the message area. Hopefully there are enough honest people here that will take you up on the game. (heck, I might take you up on the game - and just not use a dictionary! :-)) +++++++ BBW

i'm not saying it is not fair to use a dictionary...i am saying that if u are playing someone that they could be honest and say that is how they are playing the game so at least u have the choice of playing them or not,if u prefer not to play that way.

Im playing scrabble ( which this game is close to in some ways) when playing scrabble at home its cheating if you look up a word in the dictionary. So here it seems it is cheating as well to have to look up strange words that you and I all know most people would never use or even know if they didn't have that handy dandy scrabble dictionary next to them. Where is the real challenge there if you can't make up your own words but need to rely on another sourse to help you win. I think that is what was meant in the first post?

But here a lot of players are at an disadvantage. They aren't playing in the native tounge. Is it cheating for them to use a dictionary, to at least help them a bit on the way? Otherwise we could leave the game to thoose that have English as first language (and to some degree others that are fluent in English).

magnus...i can see your point, but that was not what I was talking about..I was refering to those that u would play, that used weird words that even english people have not heard of and worst of all when u would ask them where they got it they would not answer u and admit they were using dictionaries....I am just saying that it would be nice to at least admit it and then a player has a choice or not to play that way..I do realize now through big bad wolf that u can post in your invite a msg.but I have yet to figure out how to do that on this site.

lol bigbadwolf...if your tired of all the searching there are alot that don't use dictionaries...thanks for your honesty.

First of all, I agree it should be obvious that if you want to play a game without dictionary then the opponent must be honest and stay away from dictionaries. But in general I would advice players to use dictionaries when playing GWG. In some way or other you must find out whether the word is recognized as a legal word. There are lost of english words not listed in the dictionary (this has been discussed earlier) and there are some strange words in the dictionary. By using a dictionary all players will play at the same level. This will also eliminate the advantage of native english speakers.

tore thats all i was asking for is for people to be honest...i know i asked some and they just refused to say so.Appreciate your comments..

#22 · beanchi2

19 Sep 2002

touche Tore i agree and think it's more of a honesty factor than to use or not to use.

#23 · Magnus

19 Sep 2002

I can agree to that! I have been using a dictionary in some of my games. But I would also have said so if asked :)

#24 · gabbybrook

thats cool magnus ...just that when asked some would not say...appreciate your comments

If dictionaries, etc. are not permitted, those of us whose native language is English will, in general, obviously have a tremendous advantage over those native language is not English. On the other hand, the use of every list imaginable produces words that, at best, are suspect as to whether or not they are truly words in English. Since I can not solve this dilemma, I have decided never to play the game unless my opponent and I can agree to what we will or will not use.

your right pablo....as long as each are playing the same way is what is fair....
