Negro, which comes from either Spanish [negro] or Portuguese [negro] which in turn come from Latin [niger], has been a perfectly good word in English for probably at least two centuries, perhaps almost four. [Since I do not have a Complete Oxford Dictionary of the English Language handy, I can not verify the last part of the preceding sentence.] For us to not be able to use in a word game a word which comes from another language would mean that we would be limited to only a small part of our current English vocabulary. In fact, what I have typed so far would be unintelligible if all words not "native" to the Western Branch of the Germanic Languages were deleted.
Possibly, Negro was not permitted because it is a Proper Noun, a type of word which Scrabble does not permit, if I understand the rules of that game corrrectly. I do not know.
Negro, by the way, is acceptable as both a noun and an adjective.
A word which a good friend of mine recently tired to use against me on this site, but could not, was "sailmaker." I would really appreciate it if someone could explain why he could not have used that word.

This site uses a dictonary called "ENABLE". Anyone can download a copy of this list and check to see what word are in this list. So where a word is from and such really does not matter on this site - it just matters if it is in the "ENABLE" list or not. Hope this helps! ++++BBW

As a side note, you can download a copy of ENABLE (which is a public domain list of words used by many "scrabble" and "scrabble" like sites) --- you can down load it from here: http://personal.riverusers.com/~thegrendel/software.html (look for ENABLE & ENABLE2K)
