The old Java version of this server will most likely stop being used starting on September 1?

Richard Malaschitz, can you please give us a little additional info on the reply you gave on 2026-06-29 in the "how can checkmate be a draw?" topic in the LG General forum?

For starters, what will we notice first and/or most?

The server architecture currently consists of two parts: a very old Java codebase (more than 20 years old) and a relatively new codebase written in Go. The legacy Java code causes a number of issues, including security and performance problems. It is also more memory-intensive and increases the overall hosting costs. The new Go code is much easier to maintain and allows new games and features to be developed and deployed much more quickly.

As of July 1, all games are fully functional in Go and available through the new client at https://www.littlegolem.net/app/

This also means that all games will be available in the new mobile application. One advantage of this is that it will be possible to play local offline games (one player versus another) on a phone or tablet.

This has been by far the biggest and most challenging task over the past few months, which is probably why there have been more bugs than usual.

I’m currently testing the new implementation extensively by playing around 200 games across all game variants. There are still a few graphical issues in some games (Shogi, Wyps, etc.). After that, I still need to implement the remaining functionality from the Java server that handles tournaments and player pairings, but that is significantly less work.

The client also needs to be adapted for desktop web browsers, since it is currently optimized more for mobile devices. For example, it doesn’t yet have a move list or an easily accessible chat with your opponent.

My current estimate is that between August 1 and October 1, both the old and the new servers will run in parallel. If everything goes well during that period, the old server can then be retired. That will also make it possible to migrate to a different database and simplify the overall infrastructure.

Once that is complete, I can finally start adding some of the long-awaited new features, such as real-time online play and other improvements.

Will the "TXT" button for Dots and Boxes be coming back?

For example:

https://www.littlegolem.net/servlet/sgf/2555092/game2555092.txt

now returns "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable"

Thanks.

Seeing Richard's recent post about rewriting the server reminded me how much volunteer work goes into keeping LG running. I've been happy to support the site with a membership each year because I've gotten years of enjoyment out of it. If you're in a position to do so, it's one way to help keep the site healthy. meow.

Thanks for reminding me, MisterCat!

It turns out that, in addition to the "TXT" button, looking at the game history using the browser OR using trmph.com is also broken.

It seems show previous move (forward/backward buttons) is not working anymore, after clicking on it I am getting 'Service unavailable' error.

If it will be fixed with upgrade (after September, 1st), I wouldn't bother looking into it, otherwise could you please check, Rio ?

Tried in Firefox (Desktop)

Thanks

I noticed that the Amazons analysis is also broken. Probably the same cause : I meant the missing access to game history as text.
