The annual Mind Sports Olympiad is coming up at the end of August. Full details are available here at http://www.boardability.com/.
Chess events include:
Exchange (Pairs) on Sat 18 August
Chess 20 min (6 or 7 rounds) on Sun 19 August
Chess960 (6 rounds) on Tue 21 August
Chess Evening on Wed-Thu 22-23 August
Oh, forgot about Diving Chess on Mon 27 August. In this event, intended to be more fun than serious, competitors wear swimming costumes and play on floating boards. Apart from briefly viewing the move made by the opponent, the player must immediately dive below the surface of the water. On re-surfacing they must make their move immediately.
Good fun but be aware that you can get quite cold. This event is not suitable for the very young or anyone with disabilities (though the other chess events, of course, are).
The Diving Chess event this year was won (after a tie-break) by Etan Ilfeld from the US. Losing on tie-break (and taking silver) was James Heppell from the UK. Taking the bronze was Alain Dekker from South Africa. I'm pleased to inform you that no players suffered any ill-effects apart from sore eyes and cold bodies!
Well, with a URL to www.geocities.com/abdekker/ in his profile, it seem likely that:
a) He is indeed the Alain Dekker - in which case congrats!
b) He needs to change that URL, There ain't no such thing as geocities any more.
