How to pass?

Forgive me, I've never played this game, but the rules say I should be able to pass to a teammate if I have enough pips left? I just tried a real-time online version, and I can do it there. What am I doing wrong?

The passing is calculated automatically. The board shows you all the spots where you are able to place the ball - that is, it's FINAL destination, AFTER any and all passes.

I wish it were possible to see what the heck my opponent did. It would help me learn how to set up blocking formations.

If you click in the move list on the previous move, the difference between that and the current situation is what your opponent just did. The difference should consist of the position of exactly one of your opponent's men, and, if that man kicked the ball, the position of the ball.
