Brands of Scotch whiskey

Empathy

A mistake, surely. There's no such a thing as Scottish Whiskey. It's Irish Whiskey, or Scottish Whisky. IE, an 'e' makes the name Irish, no 'e' is Scottish.

Do not discuss the current game - *anything* that is said may influence what people enter.

End of thread.

I don't see why not.

Discussing an ongoing game is much less harmful to the game than copying the top ten answers of a previous game (when it's a repeat).

If some players are allowed to ruin the game in such a blatant way, why others shouldn't be allowed to discuss ongoing topics?

You know, I have sometimes wondered about the sociological question of how large a society has to be before it needs police and a judicial system. If we sent 6 astronauts to Mars for a year and a half would one need to be the policeman? Probably not. If we had a moon colony of 50 people, would some be the police?

Among flocks of geese, some individuals are more naturally inclined to be aware of danger. It's in the goose species's interest to keep such some watchdogs in the mix of their gene pool.

Actually - just to be a pain - not discussing a game does influence its outcome either, right? I mean there are sometimes obvious misconceptions that would not have happened with any discussion. So not doing it influences the game, and doing it influences the game. Who said one is better than the other (Yes, I know, FatPhil said, but this is supposed to be more metaphorical question)

And lots of pages out there on the internet are touching the subject, obviously. So are we not allowed to contribute to them or read them (as that would influence it)? Should we not mention that there is an internet, in any of the discussion threads, as that might influence it?

I think that there is no clear red line, just a gray area.

Now what do the rules say? Nothing about that topic, right. But there is an dedicated 'Empathy Forum'. So - citing someone famous - 'if god would not want us to discuss the game, why did he give us a forum to do so?'

Back to normal mode (above was devils' advocate mode) - I can agree to the idea of no discussion of the current topic, if the majority agrees. But I do not see the rule as something obvious and god-given.

@MarleyGhost: interesting question. I would say as soon as it is large enough so that not all subject personally know and trust each other. That might still work 'once removed' - like I trust my friends' friends - but for sure not twice removed - or do you trust people that are brought by friends of your friends to your party?

That's another rule:

Any "End of Thread" statement does not stop others from adding more to a thread.

Similar applies to statements like "No off-topic comments in this thread, please"

There's no police required to enforce laws of nature

@MarleysGhost: Luckily there's no police to enforce netiquette, and this has nothing to do with the size of the community.

Surely, if it IS a mistake, surely I - and anyone else, for that matter - could query it immediately. Irish is "whiskey", Scottish is "Whisky".

A Scotsman who spells

Whisky with a n ‘e’,

should be hand cuffed

and thrown head first in the Dee.

In the USA and Ireland,

it’s spelt with an ‘e’

but in Scotland

it’s real ‘Whisky’.

So if you see Whisky

and it has an ‘e’,

only take it,

if you get it for free!

For the name is not the same

and it never will be,

a dram is only a real dram,

from a bottle of ‘Scotch Whisky’.

For

Whiskey with an ‘e’

Read Whiskey with an e

And so on.

there is no such a thing of 'misconception' in GoE. Perhaps people don't think the same as you when they read the expression, but that's what empathy is all about.

Calling Scottish Whisky as Scottish WHISKEY is simply wrong, it's not a misconception. American whiskey, or Irish Whiskey is correct. I simply don't understand why the people who do the empathy in the first place don't listen to American/English in the first place.

That is roughly equivalent to insisting that the Italians produce no wine, only vino. The Scots can spell it however they want; it's still whiskey.

#17 · Dionysos

Not on the bottle, though. On the bottle, in Scotland, it's "whisky".

Not the same as, say, gas or petrol. That's just English/American for simply a word, but for a brand label, the Scottish word is Whisky", The Irish, and I think the American, label for their own brand, is "whiskey".

The same as Champagne - strictly speaking, it's from the Champagne region, everything else is just sparkling wine.

why are you repeating the word 'noob'? Do you want to impress us with your age?
