Would it be possible to eliminate J, K, X, W, and Y from the Italian version of the game? These letters are not part of the Italian alphabet and are rarely used in Italian (usually in words of foreign origin).
I agree... the game is becoming unplayable with all these letters. Every time one of these letters comes by it remains there until the end of the match, and it's not difficult to see Italian matches that end with 4-5 completely unused letters, hence playing as if the pool was made of 2-3 letters only!
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zingarelli I change letters to: IIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOORRRRRRRTTTTTTNNNNNSSSSSCCCCLLLLMMMPPPUUUBBDDFFGGVVZ
As you can see J, K, X, W, and Y are not even listed.
I would definitely keep the Q and the H. The Q is rare but the Z is rarer. Also the Q appears in frequently used Italian words such as quarto (fourth), quadro (painting), quale (which), or quanto (how much). The H is actually more frequent than common letters such as B or F. It is used in normal words such as chiave (key), chiesa (church), or chi (who).
The problem with those two letters is that the Q needs the U and the H needs a C or a G.
I do not use frequency table but I calculate frequency according to words and letters in dictionary. For every letter I known its frequency and I can decide to use this word or not. In scrabble some languages are used all letters in alphabet - English, Slovak. In some languages (Italian, Portuguese, Polish) are abnormal letters removed.
I calculate number of stones with some letter as round(NumberOfStonesInGame x frequency). Because frequency of letter H is 0.539 % for 91 letters it is not enough. Letter Q has frequency only 0.08%. Letter Z more than 1.0 %.
