Yet another change in championship tournament without any warning or information. I don't belive 7-base board is good for numeric WYPS. The first move's influence on the result is much higher. And giving 7 stones at the beginning is also a misunderstandig to me. If a first (well, second to be precise) player uses his 6 stones on his very first move, he can obtain a big advantage. The game is shallower and less interesting than 10-base board games.
I am considering resigning all games on my first move. I am not against changes. Changes are good if they improve the game and make it more fun, playable, exciting, luck-less-dependent.
I don't like the changes being made on numeric WYPS so often and without an info nor voting.
I agree! Changes in championships should at least be announced in advance, and I also agree that this new smaller board is a big mistake. Richard, If you want to add a new variation, that is wondeful, but the championship should be the larger sized board, in my opinion. I thought the variation used in championship 6 was the best numeric wyps to date. It was a very good game, so why change it?
I agree that the championship should generally be representative of the pinacle of each game. So generally that would mean the larger board size (and in particular in wyps numeric's case), and the 'deepest' variant of the rules. I've not played the game enough to know exactly which variant that would be, but I'm sure the collective input of the gurus on LG can provide that insight.
I just pulled up a board - I can't believe 7 isn't a mistake. I'll not play any moves, so that the tournament can be redrawn as a 10-based one without anyone saying I was benefitting from the change. (Assuming it is changed - pretty please, Richard!)
I am sorry. It is my mistake. I want add a new numeric version played on smaller board, and instead of add a new version I replace old version. This version has the same rules, but is maybe too small. Probable best size for numeric version is 8 or 9.
I think the size 10 is best for champs because of:
- using whole range of digit numbers,
- tradition - all previous variants were played on 10-based boards, we get used to it,
- games last for 25 moves aproximately, which is not too short but still dynamic; if we reduce the size we reduce the total move number to, let's say, 15 - does it merit to champs?
I do not negate other sizes. I am sure that playig 7-based WYPS numeric would be fun. But not in champs.
I always assumed that champs are tourneys with a prestige. 7-based is not a prestige to me at all.
I also vote for canceling this championship. Championships should be played on larger boards and we can experiment with new variants in lesser tournaments.
And, in general, introducing any new variant of any game should be preceded by assessing and discussing the possible consequences for at least two weeks.
