Hello,

I haven't played much real time Hex since Kurnik. Where is the best / most active place to play today?

Well, they removed hex several years ago.

In my opinion, Little Golem is the best place to play Hex! However, this is a turnbaseds site. If you're looking for "real-time" games, I'd suggest iggamecenter. It has lots of games, not only Hex. There are not always many players logged on, however, so you'll need a little luck with your timing.

There are four real time Hex sites that I know of.

Game Center, as Marius mentioned, is the most popular one. As of this posting, there have been 84 Hex games played there in the last 30 days. See their statistics page. You can choose any grid size from 8 to 15, plus 19. They have time controls available as an option and a rating system is in place. The display is a fixed size. One workaround for this is to change your monitor resolution when you play.

Ludoteka is a Spanish server with English menus available. The display resizes, the graphics are excellent, grid sizes 9 through 15 are available, there are time controls and a rating system. But players are quite rare.

Board Space has sizes 11, 15, and 19, the usual bells & whistles, but again players are rare. There is an active times table where you can see when players meet, but this is for all the games not just Hex. It looks like Mondays around 2000 GMT is your best bet.

Jatek is Hungarian. They call Hex "Híd." Good luck figuring out how to play, never mind finding an opponent. The rating system is based on wagering. You wager how many points are at stake when you set up the game. Also the swap rule doesn't work correctly as I recall.

Uh, the Jatek term for Hex is "Hid" with an upwards sloping accent over the i.

@ David, have you considered writing a book on Hex / Twixt, you seem to be the fount of all good knowledge on both of those topics.

I've got an interesting idea about how to play Hex (and other strategy games online) that I'd like to check with you. Perhaps another time.

There is also:

http://havannah.vying.org/applet.html, it's a java applet,

so moves are exchanged quickly, ratings are somehow implemented, game archives (sgf), time ...

except almost no players (i didn't advertise so much till now)

If someone wants to try it, im online there *right now*.
