I noticed that there are kyu / Dan ratings as well as numeric ratings for hex. There doesn't seem to be a monotonic function relating them. For example the Dan ratings and numeric ratings of the top two rated players for hex (13) right now are inverted.

Maciej Celuch is currently 2723.5 Elo and ranked 11 Dan. Arek Kulczycki is 2467.1 Elo and 7 Dan.
11 Dan is higher than 7 Dan, it checks out. Kyu is inverted, a higher number means a lower rank, but that is not the case for Dan.
However.
In order to gain a rank, you need not only a certain rating, but also a certain absolute number of won games. So a new stellar player that has just climbed the ratings might not have enough games to get a very high rank.
And you never lose a rank, so a player declining in ratings can still have a very high rank.

Got it thanks!
You get inversions because rank never goes down and requires a certain number of games.
Thanks for the link, I hadn't noticed that before.
