#8 · FatPhil

1 Feb 2009

That's a very simply question to answer. It's very low effort - just wait...

#9 · isometry

1 Feb 2009

Probably the top 9 on the rating list among those registered for the championship at the time when the championship starts.

#11 · wccanard

1 Feb 2009

Hjallti probably wants this conversation to take place in another thread. But imagine you're the webmaster---how would you possibly do it, other than in the way isometry suggests. So I bet that's the right answer.

#12 · Dvd Avins

1 Feb 2009

With Twixt, he planned to take the top 10 and ended up taking the top 11, I guess because there were only two points between 10th and 11th. (It retrospectively took away some of my excitement of having scrambled to be 10th.)

#13 · Hjallti

#23 · isometry

17 Mar 2009

I suspected that one person might be involved in both reversi and 4 in a row, and then it turned out that the same two players were involved in both!

#24 · ypercube

17 Mar 2009

And now it seems that both games are over!

.. poules mean: how many poules there are where there are games running.

#27 · alain

20 Mar 2009

I hope this isn't off-topic, but what is a "poule" please?

#28 · Ray Garrison

20 Mar 2009

poule is sometimes an alternate spelling for "pool", or, poule could also mean a prostitute. However, the word "poule" is not in the OSPD4 (scrabble dictionary). So it is an obscure word. I think he means "pool" or more specifically, how many "groups" (as little golem calls them) are still not yet finished in the entire championship. For example, there are 404 unfinished games of Havannah in 15 different, unfinished "groups"

#29 · wccanard

21 Mar 2009

poule is Dutch for pool; it's the word used at jijbent.nl to describe the first round of a tournament. Hoodiers is Dutch ;-)

#30 · wccanard

21 Mar 2009

While I'm here---hoodiers, did you do that count manually?? Someone should automate it and post here a couple of times a month with a similar summary. Rororo?

#31 · hoodiers

21 Mar 2009

@ alain, Ray Garrison: I meant groups.

@wccanard: Yes, I did it manually.

#32 · Dvd Avins

21 Mar 2009

I've heard it observed that Ir you read Dutch words and pronounce them with German (presumably Hochdeutsch) phonetics, the sounds are close enough to English cognates that you can make out what's being written. I'm sure with Frisian, it's even easier. In any case, it's hardly surprising that "poule" meant a pool of players.

#33 · wccanard

21 Mar 2009

@Dvd: what complete twaddle ;-)

#34 · wccanard

28 Mar 2009

Viper lost about 50 games by time-out overnight. Was he holding up any championships? He was holding up a dots and boxes monthly cup, that's why I noticed; I've been monitoring him recently ;-)

#35 · Art Duval

28 Mar 2009

Hex 13x13 starting in about 3 days (approx Tue Mar 31)

#36 · Hjallti

31 Mar 2009

'poule' is not a dutch word of origin. I would think it's french. It is even when correctly pronounced in dutch not following the rules of dutch pronouncation. (I mean like 'computer' which should be written in dutch 'kompjoeter' it would be written 'poel' or 'poelle' according to its pronouncation).

So it might be right that German and Dutch phonetics are similar (clearly not equal) but it is wrong to apply it to 'poule' which would be pronounced as 'Paul-le' if it were a purely dutch word. (In German it would be 'pulle' with the 'u' almost unhearable).

#37 · MichaeI X

31 Mar 2009

@Dvd: Don't tell neither Dutch nor Germans, that their language is the same. Espceially the spelling (of both) was invented to emphazise the differences.

For my German eyes, "poule" looks very French (and if it were, it would be 'chicken' with a broad spectrum of meanings, including Ray's explanation), but "pool" is very English.

@alain: thanks for bringing this to our attention.

@wccanard: Im very grateful as well for "twaddle".

There's more to learn here than slang nicknames of genitals. (In GoE recently, if someone interested missed that)

#38 · wccanard

31 Mar 2009

@Michael X: I think twaddle is British English and might not be used in the US.

Related thing: I was giving a talk in U C Berkeley once, and I was referring to something that was not straight, and I said it was "wonky" and continued on. A member of the audience stopped me and asked what "wonky" meant. I was slightly surprised because it was a standard English word as far as I am concerned (I am English). I said "erm...wonky? You don't know what wonky means? It means skewiff" and then continued on. And then someone else stopped me and asked what "skewiff" meant. I was running out of words to describe what I was trying to explain!

#39 · wccanard

31 Mar 2009

PS @Hjallti: the reason I asserted that poule was Dutch for "first round of a tournament" was only that this is how it is used at jijbent.nl. I am not claiming to be any sort of authority at all in Dutch and I am sure your comments are hence more accurate than mine.

#40 · Hjallti

31 Mar 2009

@wccanard: I was once at a conference in Romania which was in English, and it happened to be that the first 12 speakers had different nationalities. In such a case you always miss the first 3 sentences of any talk, because you need to refocus on that brand of English (French, Scottish, Chinese, Australian, England-English, German, Romanian, American, Italian). Unfortunately understanding the language was not that much a problem but the math was the biggest problem.

#41 · Paulzz

31 Mar 2009

Poule is the French word for chicken, and also for pool. And it's pronounced exactly like "pool", so I guess there where a(nother) cross-channel misunderstanding at some point. And maybe we convinced the Dutch to write it "poule" instead of "pool". We're so influential :)

#42 · Dvd Avins

1 Apr 2009

I wasn't saying Dutch and German were the same. Obviously related, but not the same. In fact, if my father knoew Dutch phonetics rather than German, he might have a harder time reading Dutch than he does. It's the combination of pronouncing it like German and listening to it like English that he says makes it comprehensible.

#43 · Art Duval

1 Apr 2009

wccanard: I understand "wonky", but not "skewiff". I also understand "twaddle". (I've lived my whole life in the US). I use "wonky" in conversation, and my wife (also from the US) uses it a lot. I don't actually say "twaddle", at least not much.

Hjallti: Your math conference story is a familiar one. A related joke, many mathematicians may know (or at least can relate to). A math talk should consist of three parts: the first part where everyone understands, the second part where only the experts understand, and the third part where only the speaker understands. However, to save time, most speakers skip right to the third part. :)

(Some people think there should also be a fourth part to the talk, where not even the speaker understands what s/he is saying.)

#44 · FatPhil

1 Apr 2009

I'm not surprised you don't know 'skewiff', as that spelling's not even reached the dictionaries yet. You should be able to find it under 'skew-whiff', 'skew-wiff', or 'skew-wift' though. However, the dictionaries are sloppy, and behind the times - I personally would never spell it any other way than how WC spelt it.

I once was at a summer school for graduate student (PhD-students). The first 3 days we gave talks about the basic material to each other (there was some text we had to follow) and the next three days experts would give talks about the state of the art new things. So some chinese expert Xiao decided to give a talk about an article (accepted but not yet published) of my promotor and me. So while everyone turned at me in the audience with some questionmark on their face that I actually wrote that stuff, and was supposed to understand it. Xiao took such an angle on the subject that I was also fully in the dark about it. Xiao was that kind of mathematician that you are wondering if he is the third or the fourth part of the talk :-).

@Paul: "And maybe we convinced the Dutch to write it "poule" instead of "pool". Dutch has been influenced by french more than by english anyway, so it would have been surprizing to get 'pool'.

(In dutch pool (pronounced in the english way) is used as far as I know only for the American variant of snooker, pronounced in the dutch way (with straith o-sound (Like in the english word 'Poland')) it is to indicate a (magnetic) pole or in habitant of Poland. Another mathematical joke from the time that of Cold War when the European Commutity was West-Europe "What is the Circle integral around Western Europe?" The answer is really way over offensive for the Poles, I have to admit, but it dates from the time that we were told they were the enemies (and they were told we were the enemies)...)

By the way: In dutch 'poule' is only used for 'round-robins" and for pool in any other context.

I want to remind everyone on very first sentence of the this topic :-)
